Inclusion of professional skills in the civilengineering curriculum has become increasingly important through the implementation of theBody of Knowledge.1In some cases of implementing peer review into the classroom experience, peer review isconsidered part of writing in teams.2, 3, 4 Conventional team writing has been documented to havelimited interactions in producing cohesive final written documents.4, 5 In at least one instance(Ref. 4), a highly structured writing cycle was implemented to allow laboratory team membersan opportunity to serve in different roles associated with typical peer review process (i.e., leadauthor, reviewer, editor). CoursesThe LEWAS was designed as an educational outreach tool to promote water sustainabilityconcepts through discovery based classroom modules that utilize a remote laboratoryenvironment. Through real-time data acquisition and display via the LabVIEW website, theLEWAS simulates a remote laboratory where students can virtually situate themselves at theLEWAS site. These modules were built upon previous empirical research developed by LEWASmembers that suggest that access to real-time data improve a student’s understanding of watersustainability concepts2. While this course did nothave a component that readily lent itself to an intervention, it is considered to be the best optionfor an intervention in the sophomore year because the other sophomore level CE courses haveless flexibility in their content and have less flexibility in learning objectives.
