decrease in enrollment numbers and shift to onlineteaching, combined with multiple reports of cheating in the wake of COVID-19, present aninteresting case for studying the students' performance at different phases of COVID-19. The CityTech is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and many of our students come from low-incomehouseholds and underrepresented communities which were dramatically affected by the pandemic.For the CST Department, the portions of students with economic disadvantages from the totalenrolled numbers are around 72.5% in Fall 2019 and around 64% in Fall 2020. students to chooseengineering as a career. With an emphasis on smart and connected cities, the SCR2 programprovides summer research experiences (eight weeks for students and six weeks for teachers).This paper presents our learnings and insights of the program for the past four years withevaluation findings. There have been 116 students and 44 teachers who have successfullyparticipated. The research program was conducted on campus in 2019, but due to COVID-19, theprogram was conducted online in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, the program was redesigned to behybrid, and six host sites participated. employment in an industry anxious for employees. The UtahDepartment of Workforce job forecasts and other job trends surveys indicate that while thesestudents can earn strong salaries without degrees, their careers will not advance as they wouldwith degrees [5]. Employers are also feeling the disadvantage of too few job candidates with theadequate training provided by a baccalaureate degree [6]. The lack of adequate number ofscholarships in Computer Science and Engineering programs is a significant inhibitor ingraduating and enrolling more students. Page - 2 For instance, the initial question we developed was “Can we use available institutional data toidentify differences in pass rates between student subgroups and can we predict time to declare successfor these different groups?”. We hypothesized there would be no detectable differences, and found wedisproved that null theory. For academic years 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20, 3,286frosh students came to the concerned Californian university to study engineering. Of that entire group,2,514 (77%) were able to successfully meet course requirements and declare engineering major by theend of their second year.
