from the CMCET 691 Senior Projects course, students are required toproduce time and cost estimates then track their adherence to the proposed schedule and budget.The majority of capstone style courses in construction management programs provide thestudents with a given program, typically including a client provided design and budget. Thevariance comes when students need to mock-up prototypes of joints and assemblies in addition tothe full scale production of the project. Students working on the Transitional Disaster Sheltercompetition learned to develop a secondary budget for mock-ups that ran concurrent with themain shelter construction and schedule the mock-ups to allow time for design changes based onthe results of those mock

isclear that the need to integrate BIM exists. However, the appropriate curricular location has notbeen decided. Some have suggested that BIM be part of a first level undergraduate course whileother schools have placed it as a capstone project in their course sequence 13. In a case studyusing the capstone project to integrate BIM, many students had to learn the software alone. Thistook up most of the time for the project but proved to be beneficial for future employment. Mostof the students that worked with BIM as part of the project are using BIM in their currentconstruction jobs. Furthermore, many are assuming company leadership roles associated withBIM, demonstrating the success of BIM integration into the CM curriculum.Building Information

State University Robert M. Leicht is an assistant professor and graduate of the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He is the Director of the Partnership for Achieving Construction Excellence (PACE) at Penn State. Rob is an investigator in the new delivery methods study seeking to empirically capture the impact of integration on project success. Rob leads the construction engineering course dedicated to mechanical and electrical systems construction, he is the lead faculty for the construc- tion option capstone course; he teaches graduate level courses in production management and project delivery systems
