process, also known as Genchi Gembutsu (or “go and see”), is an integral part of the PDCA problem solving. It requires that the teams gather data at the source of the problem while brainstorming in a structured way such as using tools like fishbone diagrams, decision trees or the 5 Why’s. This module ends with the team debriefing to the rest of the class on their A3 document from problem definition up to their proposed countermeasure plan. Then the teams go through the activity again per their proposed countermeasure known as implementation plan (step 6) to confirm the result (step 7).  Mechanical DesignThe centerpiece of the new Intro to ME curriculum is a 9 week lab sequence in which studentsbuild a small bore pneumatic powered potato gun that is controlled using an Arduinomicrocontroller. In the initial 3 weeks of the course, students learn to use the machine shop tofabricate the potato gun components. The noise in the differentiator circuitshown in Fig. 9 can be improved by placing an extra resistor of small resistance in series with thecapacitor.In the second part of the laboratory, the simple integrator circuit as shown in Fig. 12 was simulatedand the result is shown in Fig. 13. The integrator circuit was built on the breadboard and the inputand output signals were captured by the oscilloscope. The waveforms are shown in Fig. 14. We are currently also running a smallpilot follow-on course that is conducted in a project-based approach where the students involvedspecify performance parameters, design (including printed circuit), and test a regulator board thatcould be used in subsequent offerings of our initial course offering. The University of San Diego (USD) falls into the latter category withan electrical engineering (EE) curriculum focused on the electronics and communicationsindustries rather than on electrical machines.
