improve conceptual understanding and critical thinking.Evan S Miller, GeoEngineers, Inc. Evan graduated from Washington State University with a masters in civil engineering with emphasis on water resources. Post graduation, Evan primarily works in the field of river and habitat restoration. Projects of this nature involve many areas of water resource engineering including hydrology, hydraulics, open channel design, one and two dimensional hydraulic modeling, AutoCAD and ArcGIS plan design, and project coordination. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2016 Hydrology experiment design: an open-ended lab to foster student engagement and critical

Moreover, the multi-modalinteractivity of the smartphone touchscreen facilitates intuitive interfaces that may improve userexperience as s/he interacts with a physical system through the smartphone.4 Thus, the embeddedtechnologies of smartphones have a great potential to impact the experiences of educators, researchers, and students in laboratory settings. In fact, smartphones have already been leveragedin educational settings to sense parameters of physical systems such as the rotational energy of apendulum by attaching the smartphone to a bicycle wheel and measuring the angular velocitythrough the embedded gyroscope.5 Even as this application of rigidly mounting the smartphoneto the system exploits the embedded sensing capability of these devices

’ positions, the height of the water varies accordingly (Figure 2).After measuring the heights of the fluid in each of the tubes, the airfoil’s pressure distributionmay be computed.ANSYS CalculationsUsing several tutorials and the professor’s instruction, one of the students conducted analysis ofthe NACA 2412’s aerodynamics on ANSYS’s Fluid Flow (Fluent) solver. Rather than rotatingthe wind velocity’s angle of attack, a formula was derived to rotate the base coordinates of theNACA 2412 by a certain angle ϴ. This method ensured the most consistent mesh across allangles that were tested. After importing the airfoil’s rotated coordinates, a mesh was generatedthat would strategically measure the aerodynamics of the airfoil at key regions. Across all

week. The topics/activities foreach week and their type classification(s) are listed in Table 1. In this table, classifications A-Cwere developed by the authors to describe teaching approaches used in the DBE course thatrange from fully deductive to a combination of deductive/ inductive; D-G are based on theinquiry classification scheme proposed in Tafoya et al.7 and expanded by Staver and Bay8; andH-L are drawn from a comprehensive review of inductive teaching approaches assembled byPrince and Felder5. In general the classifications are listed left to right in Table 1 ranging fromdeductive to increasingly self-directed, inquiry-based methods. The remainder of this section willdefine each classification in the context of the DBE course.Table 1

ma-chines with different specimens a KUKA KR 30-3 robot is used for automated specimenhandling. Different grippers and concepts were developed to guarantee a safe remote speci-men handling11. In the following we will refer to the Zwick Z 250’s usage for performingtensile tests. This test is one of the most common and efficient tests for determining materialproperties12. The properties are important for designing manufacturing processes and can beused in forming applications like FEM-Simulations (e.g. simulation of forming processes orproduction processes). Hence, it is on the one hand a very basic but on the other hand an im-portant test in context of manufacturing technology. Figure 1: Tele-operative testing cell at TU Dortmund

. The student teams then wrote about their optimization process andresults in an IMRAD lab report. By completing the project, students fulfilled several of thecourse goals, such as demonstrating an effective design process, generating multiple solutions, analyzing possible solutions, and seeing the design through to completion. They also gainedexposure to the IMRAD genre and were able to practice writing a technical description of theiroptimized WEC design and creating effective visuals for data presentation.References1 Dusseau, R. The students also relied heavily on the TA; only 1 person said s/hedid not get TA assistance for the NI myDAQ lab.TroubleshootingJust as was observed in class, the most common way that students approached troubleshootingwas to visually compare their circuit to the diagram. Of the students reporting, 7 completedtroubleshooting visually; 2 people used the multimeter; no one used the oscilloscope; and onestudent wrote that s/he “tried everything” (Table 1). A key objective of these labs is for studentsto encounter problems building the circuit and have to invoke circuit debugging techniques. Allstudents except one indicated confusion about how to proceed at some point during the lab. Thisis evidence that the
