relocated to other DoD activities. The Metrology Engineering Center functionsand associated personnel were proposed to be relocated to a Navy activity in Indiana. This, ofcourse, caused the highly experienced and technical workforce to begin to plan for a potentialuprooting of homes and families and relocation to Indiana should the proposal be accepted by theBRAC Commission who had the final say. While the case was argued and reviewed, manyemployees found other jobs in Southern California. Others awaited an outcome. A generousseverance package would be available for those who chose to await the final outcome and thenbe involuntarily separated rather than relocate. Students are guided through the literature reviewprocess by our engineering librarian, then conduct a literature review on their topic of research.Once the literature review is completed, time is spent with each team making sure the properquestion or hypothesis is generated. Next, a high level research plan is developed with acorresponding list of equipment and materials that each student needs in order to perform theirexperimentation. Students are allowed to purchase small items needed for their research if theitems are not available in the currently existing undergraduate research lab. We do not have a setbudget for the students because we might decide to spend more on a particular item because ofits reusability for future experiments

For example, having a measurement kit and hand-outs is not enough forsome metrology professionals; they want a script and lesson plans too. Other Ambassadorsdemonstrate creativity and are able to effectively use the resources to supplement what theymight do.
