, students in this course have been offeredthe option of attending a hands-on library workshop and receiving extra credit on a relatedproject report. Since several hundred students enroll in over 25 sections of this course each fall, the workshop format was developed as an alternative to traditional one-shot library instruction, which is not practicable on this scale. To better assess how the workshops were serving thestudents in these large classes, a group of instructors from the class and the engineering librarianworked together to evaluate student success with research projects and overall informationliteracy within the freshman engineering curriculum. The first initiative was to design a citationstudy assessing submitted projects for quality and

23.750.2AbstractOne problem with trying to introduce information literacy skills to engineering students is thatsome faculty are reluctant to change their courses to include this new material. Other facultyhave difficulty developing an assignment that will require students to learn and use informationliteracy skills. Having had success with a freshman orientation class, a librarian and instructionaldesigner collaborated to transform that assignment into an online module. The module wascreated in Blackboard and was designed to be generic enough so that it can easily be modifiedfor any course. The assignment asks students to work in teams on a design project. The specificdesign project can be determined by the course instructor, making the module customizable

a complete reference list in written documents • Explain how research and information sources are related to making evidence-based engineering decisionsPortions of this content are taught at two different times during the semester. Initialconversations about high quality resources occur early in the semester, during the second week, when the students are being introduced to Model Eliciting Activities (MEA). MEAs are openended design projects in real-world, client driven scenarios 4. As an early step in completing andMEA, students need to find information to help define the context of the situation for which theyare designing a solution.Week 2 focuses on a discussion of trustworthy sources and data literacy through fact checkingand

Biomedical Engineering). Initially, two librariansattended each session, and each session was only held on Tuesday afternoons from noon to2:00PM. Starting with the third semester of the project, the schedule was expanded to two dayseach week with one librarian per session (rotating through a staff of three librarians). EB I wasvisited on Tuesdays and EB III was visited on Thursdays. At the same time, the time was shifted Page 23.1390.3to 11:00AM to 1:00PM, in order to align more closely with openings in the typical classschedule in those buildings. To promote “Ask Us Here,” beyond the immediate signage, we posted notices on the electronicbulletin board

instruction section for a large enrollment engineeringcourse. The library session was geared specifically for Rensselaer’s engineering class. At WestVirginia University, ENGR 101 does not have one project but multiple projects throughout thesemester. Bracke and Critz8 point out that engineering students have “active hands-onparticipation in their learning experiences.” Additionally engineering students need basicinformation skills as well as evaluative and searching skills. At its best, the information wouldbe highly relevant with time-saving devices. In addition, reaching freshmen presents its own inherit challenges. Freshmen are just learninghow to function in a university setting. Coombes and Anderson9 point out that among otherthings “for online

well as make services available that are analogous to what would be encountered inperson. Web conferencing is an area that is being explored by librarians to deliver personalizedreference, information skills sessions, and continuing professional development. It offers theability to provide real-time help to people with a number of features that support socialinteractions and learning, such as live chat, whiteboards, and video conferencing. Interactionsmay also be recorded for review or self-directed learning. The literature focuses on best practices for using the various web conferencing software optionsand describes pilot projects and experiences in the use of web conferencing to provideinformation literacy skills webinars and other library

decrease in usage of Springere-books at McGill during the time that they were not included in WorldCat Local. Conversely, the usage of Springer e-books increased dramatically at UBC and U of T after the Page 23.744.10implementation of Summon, since they are full-text searchable in Summon. Collecting andanalyzing the statistics for this project was illuminating, and after working with the data andanalyzing the usage patterns, we have recommendations for vendors. These recommendationsinclude allowing discovery layers to not only index their e-books, but to search the full text inorder to increase discoverability and increase the relevance ranking of

While there were several other items with a negative association, noneof the others were significant at the p < 0.05 level. In comparison to the item analysis of theCELT instrument, items 3 and 15 both had very low item discrimination values as determined bythe point biserial correlation, and thus were determined to be poor items11. More detaileddiscussion of the item analysis can be found in this separate study.Future WorkIn the next phase of our project, we will be looking more closely at the item to item analysis, andin particular categorizing the CAT items to identify sub-categories within the broad criticalthinking

After joining the University of Michigan Library in 2009, the majority of her time and effort has been dedicated to textbook initiatives at the University of Michigan Library. Her research orientation and knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative methodological techniques has enabled her to conduct several textbook-related studies that examine and assess a wide range of potential roles the Library can play in increasing textbook affordability for the Michigan scholarly community. Natsuko most recently served as a project manager for the campus-wide eTextbook Initiative led by the
