types of instruction.Literature ReviewThe implementation of a continuous improvement plan ensures that a library instruction programmeets the needs of students, librarians, and faculty. While many academic libraries have adopteda range of assessment methods and tools to apply to student work in order to ensure thatgraduates have critical information literacy skills, it is also necessary to close the loop with aplan for improving and updating instruction1.Continuous improvement plans can take a range of forms in library instruction, including pre-and post-tests or evaluations, student surveys, evaluation of student work, self reflection, peer orsupervisor evaluation, and pedagogical workshops2,3,4,5,6. Libraries that have implementedcontinuous

indicators. Students should use information by recognizing the need, using it effectively, evaluating it, using it ethically and legally, and recognizing its changingnature. Since freshman engineering students need to learn the same things, engaging the newlibrarians in teaching basic information literacy components to freshman engineering studentsseemed to be a good place to train them. The learning process included three significant steps: Observation, reflection (and input), andpractice. A key component was to maintain the novice librarian’s engagement at each stage ofthe learning process. The novice librarians first observed sections of the in-class component, taught by an experienced engineering librarian, with the knowledge that they would be

werealso included. Where possible, questions integrated concepts from multiple disciplines. Allquestions could be answered using multiple references in the database, relaxing the dependencyon particular institutional subscriptions and better reflecting actual usage of the database. (21)Adopting a common game design element , questions progressively increased in difficulty. The “beginner” stage required the definition of a keyword, while the “intermediate” stagerequired a lookup of a single equation with perhaps a simple calculation or a material property. The “advanced” stage would constitute a calculation question with multiple steps involved orqualitative understanding of a

However, we had chosen samples randomly and theminimum response from a class was more than 18% of the class population, making aggregated analysis ofthe responses statistically valid.Reliability and ValidityIt is important to conduct a thorough measurement analysis of the instrument. It gives assurance that thefindings reflect accurate measures and that results are trustworthy. Test reliability indicates the extent towhich individual differences in scores are ‘true’ differences. As a proof of

3.1). Listservs have proven to be one of the leading sources ofinformation for finding out about conferences and other professional developmentopportunities.Subclaim 2.3 Take advantage of learning about engineering through TwitterAnother way the author has learned about the engineering subject matter is through setting upa professional Twitter feed. As she liaises to both sciences and engineering, her Twitter feedsand posts reflect involvement in both fields. The author follows different engineering Twitterfeeds, and by reading the daily posts of articles or re-tweets from others, she has gained a fairamount of knowledge about engineering. She liaises to civil, computer, mechanical, electrical, and general engineering and therefore follows

appropriate distribution channels that will reachK-12 teachers, while bearing in mind ways to measure impact via altmetrics. One factor inselecting the distribution channel was the matter of timing. The faculty member wished to createan ongoing outreach but particularly wished to focus on the summer months, when K-12 teachershave some time to reflectively consider pedagogical practices. Because time was not a limitingfactor, but ongoing relationships were a factor in the strategy, it was clear that a socialnetworking site would have assets that a site such as a microblogging site such as Twitter wouldnot have. Ultimately, it was determined that LinkedIn would be the best social network to publicize theavailability of the tools due to the presence of

IntroductionThe Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) of the American Society for Engineering Education(ASEE) will mark its fiftieth anniversary as a division in 2017. This important milestone is anappropriate time to reflect on the role and impact of librarians within ASEE and in engineeringeducation
