how capable such tools arewithin certain disciplines. This work in progress aims to shift from evaluating generative AItools’ capabilities to exploring how such tools impact the information-seeking behaviors of theirusers. The paper focuses on the impact of OpenAI’s ChatGPT on the information-seekingbehavior of engineering students. The paper presents data from a survey of engineering students. In addition, the paper provides the methodology and preliminary data from a structured interviewwhere participants will use ChatGPT to address a multifaceted problem concerning the GrandChallenges for Engineering.IntroductionNear the end of 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool.ChatGPT is a large language model

grown its user base exponentially. In particular, largelanguage models in the form of “chatbots” have become widely popular across industries anddemographics. In the first two months since its release in November 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT,the most popular AI chatbot surpassed 100 million users worldwide; as of May 2023, over halfof Americans are familiar with the concept of AI chatbots [5]. This popularity is changing theway that information is created and shared, especially among young people and more highlyeducated people. According to Pew Research Center, the groups most likely to know about anduse these chatbots are adults ages 18-29, and likelihood of use increases with education level [5].This poses both a unique challenge – and opportunity

instruction andsupport. With the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, generative artificial intelligence exploded inpopularity [14] and raised the question of whether this tool could be leveraged by researchers toassist with data extraction and formulation. Although the tool has potential to change the natureof work, research, and education [15] much of its practical utility in academic libraries remainsunderexplored, especially in the multimodal space. The following research study aims to answer two interrelated questions: what do the citationpatterns of Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) capstone students reveal about theirinformation behavior and can new AI technologies assist researchers in analyzing these citationdata?Since 2017, librarians

one's regularexpertise (White, 2009). This process of digesting a body of text and identifying patterns seemsideally suited to automation. In 2009, Ananiadou et al., [18] discussed using text mining toextract terms and expand queries. Text mining applies statistical analysis to a specific body oftext to identify patterns, including associated terms. Natural language processing (NLP) is aclosely related concept where computer programs (i.e., machine learning) extract and utilizethese patterns on unstructured text to aid understanding. NLP is a field that interacts withartificial intelligence (AI) and employs machine learning (ML) techniques. ChatGPT is an AIapplication that leverages NLP principles to understand user inputs and generate

Mathematics StatisticsEach main category and subcategory has an arXiv code, e.g.: ● Computer Science = .cs ● Artificial Intelligence = cs.AI ● Nuclear Theory = .nucl-thThe codes enable easy subject-limiting during the search process, thus: chatGPT cs.AIin the main search bar will look for arXiv preprints on chatGPT that fall inside the ComputerScience subcategory of Artificial Intelligence.arXiv search is limited and non-intuitive compared to search in subscription library databases. Tosearch the entire arXiv and not a single main category, the small search box in the upper rightcorner must be used. Open Advanced Search from here, which has more search options.Few filters
