means for delivering PBL effectively. A senior-levelproject will demonstrate how PDSA and design of experiment can be used together to both learnabout a manufacturing process and how to improve it.Students will be using three existing laboratories with manufacturing processes to demonstratethe proposed method with the 3-D printing as the featured project. As additive manufacturing inthe form of 3-D printing is becoming more popular in research and in limited production runs, itstill has many challenges when it comes to manufacturing at a large scale. These challengesinclude cost of making the product as well as speed of production. While these challenges aretechnology-based, studying current 3-D printing processes for improving quality and

requirements.Another ineffective use of time is students’ tendency to use “free tools” because of costconsiderations. Industry is very concerned about labor cost (time) and cannot afford todeal with unsupported, and often non-robust, tools. The use of such problem-plaguedtools was a major impediment to obtaining an operational system. The sponsor’s CEOhas talked to the students and emphasized that “time is money” and “do not hesitate toask for help” – especially utilizing the supporting professionals – plus looking for otherways to successfully proceed when faced with a stalled task (think out of the box).Problem Handling: “The skill of diagnosis and subsequent corrective actions that isefficacious.” In college engineering labs effective student laboratory

twoareas namely (i) those that have “simulations” and (ii) those that have “authenticinvolvement.” Simulations consist of contrived situations that are carefully designedto meet selected learning objectives and are under close faculty control. The authenticinvolvement activities expose the student to real situations with totally open-endedprojects, although the faculty may influence the selection of the situations and setperformance criteria to assure that positive learning objectives are met. Authenticinvolvements use outside clients while simulations use experimental laboratories, guided design, or case studies. In an article in 2006, Davis et al. [6] defines “thepurpose of the capstone engineering design course is to provide students
