using a variety ofcommunication instruments extended throughout all four years of the program.Conrad and Pfeiffer,4 among others, noted a growing problem in engineering education, which is amismatch between the writing students complete in their academic programs and the writing theyare expected to produce in the workplace. A 2010 survey of the Engineering Advisory board atthe University of Southern Indiana, had similar findings. Board members were asked to score boththe frequency and importance of various types of technical communications. The survey resultsare summarized in Table 1.
