bothhomogeneous teams and heterogeneous teams [4]. The advantages of homogenous teams aretypically: less conflict, better coordination, advantage of cohesion, and higher satisfaction. Theadvantages of heterogeneous teams are typically: diverse thinking, better performance oncomplex tasks, and more creativity. The disadvantages of homogeneous teams are: groupthink,decisions are one-dimensional (i.e., no contingency planning), and limited innovation. Thedisadvantages of heterogeneous teams are: difficulty agreeing, more conflict, and hard tocoordinate/manage. It has also been shown that homogeneous teams tend to reach a conclusion(albeit an inferior one) faster than heterogeneous teams [4]. This work has been corroboratedand expanded by other studies [5-9

. The 20 characteristics chosen bythe author was based on Deming’s 14 points that pertained to TQM. This was recorded in a spreadsheet form as shown in Appendix B. Theseportfolios can also be graded, evaluated and assessed using a variety of rubrics andassessment tools. The author has previously presented some of these results in a form atthe 114th ASEE Annual Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii (Narayanan 2007). Theauthor plans to generate and utilize a rubric for purposes of holistic assessment. Thisrubric is based on Washington State University’s Critical Thinking Project. This isshown in Appendix D. In this paper, we provide examples of an inquiry-basedapproach within a lean simulation of a clock assembly process, and also provide examples ofcomplementary activities that can be used with the simulation. We characterize the use of thelean simulation in an engineering course at five universities as being either inquiry-oriented ormore directed, and explore the impact on students’ evaluation of their proficiency in lean and interms of their ability to define lean. The preliminary results suggest that greater inquiryincreases students’ assessment of their proficiency, as well as an improved ability to define lean.In future analysis, we plan to characterize the use of materials at the universities

One of the first reinforcement activities for this course includes an in-class review exercisefor hypothesis testing. This exercise includes a review and reinforcing application practice onhypothesis tests and distribution yield; distribution assumption checks; single sample acceptanceplans; and MIL STD 105E acceptance plan operations.
