)composed of academic and industry leaders, leaders from ABET and the EngineeringAccreditation Commission (EAC) was chartered to advise on how to increase flexibility in theengineering accreditation criteria while maintaining a strong emphasis on educational qualityand to recommend ways to facilitate recruitment of outstanding engineers from industry andeducation to lead the ABET accreditation process. The committee identified three major barriersto change: 1) excessively long, prescriptive and detailed accreditation criteria, 2) a complicatedand user-unfriendly evaluation system, and 3) difficulty attracting technically active mid-careerprofessionals.
