Additionally, the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology also emphasizes the ability to function inmultidisciplinary teams. These educational practices have resulted in the implementation ofteam-based projects throughout engineering curriculums. Team formation, however, is not atrivial process and occasionally

hegde@pitt.eduABSTRACTThis paper presents the development and teaching of a university level course for college seniors andgraduate students on Frugal Engineering and Value Analysis. We developed and offered the course toboth business and engineering students. Here, we present the need for teaching frugal engineering in anengineering curriculum. Value Methodology or Value Engineering, along with Quality Engineering, arekey components of frugal engineering. “Wicked” problems and their challenges are also presented inthis course, along with wicked problem-solving strategies. While the concepts behind Value Engineeringwere developed in the 1940s and frequently applied in industrial, manufacturing, construction, anddefense projects, they are rarely

designs that createenvironmental, economic, and social value. We also present insights into ISE curriculumchanges that can strengthen these sustainability training elements. This effort would createentrepreneurs with engineering training who can innovate and design sustainable products andsystems for the future. We are presently implementing this effort in our sustainability course andwill share results from ongoing student projects and student surveys about their attitudes, skills, confidence, and viability for sustainability engineering as a career path.BackgroundAs environmental awareness in the general populace grows, to capitalize on an emerging marketin sustainably and responsibly designed and produced products and services, and to

research is associated with the Modernization of Undergraduate Education Program(PMG), supported by FULBRIGHT, CAPES, and U.S. Embassy in Brazil [26]. Industrialengineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul is one of the participatingcourses. This public university has participated in this project since 2019, with professors onmissions to partner with North American institutions [26], [27]. 2. MethodologyTo investigate whether the teaching strategies present in North American universities can beused in Brazilian universities, an investigation of different necessary factors was carried outin loco. For this, we used a qualitative and descriptive study to highlight the main points usedby these teaching methodologies from the perception

Sigma methodology often fail to develop analyticaland statistical competencies, which negatively impacts the adequate development of DMAICcycle, which stands for the 5 phases of the methodology: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. This problem creates the necessity of improving the efficiency of theoretical –practical content delivery strategies and techniques in the academic formation such that studentscan be prepared for successful implementation of Lean Six Sigma projects. This evidence-basedpaper explores the implementation of Guided Learning Sequences, a content delivery techniquethat combines instruction, practice, and application into real-life inspired problems, to developdata analysis competencies related to the statistical

According to the Brazilian Association of Industrial Engineering [25], the newcurriculum organizes and integrates the various teaching activities into seven blocks: (i)Production; (ii) Optimization; (iii) Quality; (iv) Human Factors; (v) Project/Product; (vi)Production Economics; and (vii) Technology [24]. UFRGS’s Industrial Engineering undergraduate program participates in theModernization of Undergraduate Education program (PMG) [26] as a pilot project to addressthe challenge of implementing a competency-based curriculum. and epistemic curiosity, engineering identity, and self-efficacy will be used to gauge student progress [2]. As a result, the Industrial Engineering (IE)department adopted the ECP idea with a focus on implementing home-based hands-on activitiesfor two courses. Learning a specific idea can start at any point, but the ECP concept starts withthe presentation of an experiment to teach the students a theory. This greatly improves thestudent's ability to retain the taught theoretical topic. The ECP concept is based on the MobileStudio project designed by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to boost students' interest andsuccess in electrical engineering [3]. Since then, many colleges, including 13 HBCUs in the USA[4], have adopted it as a

in project management[24, 25]. However, does appealing to similar interests account for the high occurrence ofincoming Computer Science or Chemical Engineering transfers? ConclusionThis work is not intended to explain why students transfer between degree programs in the waysthat they do. Rather, this enhances the understanding of where students are coming from andgoing to when the transfers occur. Without this knowledge, it can be difficult to appropriatelysupport students who find themselves in a degree program they do not enjoy, for one reason oranother. By knowing what common transfer paths are, educators can guide their students to makeinformed decisions in their educational journeys. This

students to industry. Exposing students to industry in early stages of their academictrajectory allows them to apply theoretical knowledge to real engineering projects orproblems [30].Engineering students in our department must engage in three mandatory summer internshipsat three different employment levels. The first internship leads the student to understand howan enterprise works at the operations level. Interns at this level engage in physical work, suchas working in a production line. The second internship allows the student to understand theenterprise from an intermediate job level. Students are assigned ‘desk jobs’ and work withessential data. The third internship is at the professional level and allows students toexperience working and

In a final round they do a design-for-manufacturing exercise to create a new, more buildable design, and use pull, kitting, andkanban tools to create a lean manufacturing system that can typically make five times as manyairplanes as the start state with basically the same resources. The product development simulation involves 7 students taking the roles of project management, design, analysis, systems engineering and verification and testing. They process several differentkinds of paper jobs that have different paths through the system. They perform abstract tasks, attaching labeling dots to the paper “jobs,” with time controlled by sand timers and success orfailure determined by dice. Failure can create rework
