engineering with the languages, it has in recent years added the opportunityfor students to do hands-on, experiential research before they start their internship in a company. This research experience, if it is carefully matched with the students' engineering discipline, andalso integrated into the curriculum they follow abroad, can be an excellent preparation for theirinternship in a company abroad, which follows the semester of study and research. The paper will discuss How the IEP and its students go about finding the right match between their major and the appropriate institute at the partner university What the nature of these research projects is, what students have to submit to get credit and how credit transfer for

a lessresource-intensive manner. One benefit of the collaboration is the expansion to these non-travelexperiences. For example, activities in the summer program have extended to coursecollaborations during the academic year. Senior-level (i.e., “capstone”) design teams from thethree principal universities have collaborated on projects during the academic year. These joint-projects face all the challenges of typical capstone projects with the additional logistical andcultural issues of international collaboration. They are an excellent opportunity for our students. The institutions have also benefitted from first-hand experience with new programs. Forexample, the experiences at NUS with the development of their design-based curriculum

/administrative commitment.13Despite the diversity in types of pedagogical strategies, the research on the impact of theseapproaches for students’ preparedness for global workforces has been limited.7 In contrast, however, researchers have identified many challenges associated with the implementation ofinternational experiences in engineering programs: limited capacity of an already content-fulland highly sequenced curriculum, high costs to implement globally focused programs, and therisk of delaying graduation when international experiences are included as a degreerequirement.7, 14 These challenges indicate that a more comprehensive and integrated approach toenhance development of global preparedness in engineering students is necessary to meet

Facultymembers have been very supportive of accepting the international courses as electives and onedepartment is looking to revise the curriculum to create an ideal semester for the students to goabroad, should they choose to use the semester long exchange as their method of accomplishingthe international requirement. The WCOE will be working with the other engineeringdepartments and degree programs to rework their 4-year curriculum plan to identify the idealsemester(s) students should participate in a semester-long study abroad experience.6.
