c American Society for Engineering Education, 2015 Base Lining Cross Cultural Diversity Attitudes in International Senior Capstone ProjectsAbstractIn this global world, today’s engineer is likely to have to work in global international teams withcolleagues from other nationalities. The challenge for many engineering curricula is how to include, in arealistic way, this global dimension and increase the student’s awareness of the issues that areencountered. In the Purdue University Engineering Technology program, an international capstone project was createdto increase student awareness of the cultural differences that they will encounter in global projects. Thisinternational capstone project builds on the

the students are more deeply exposed to designmethodologies. Within their senior year, students are required to complete an individual seniordesign (capstone) project, in which they apply their skills and knowledge to a project of theirchoosing. The Harvard-HKUST International Design Experience is positioned so that studentscan use the design thinking and project management skills that they have developed throughoutthe summer, in addition to the introductory design project within their engineering discipline, tobetter prepare for the more advanced multi-disciplinary project courses required in the junior andsenior years. Unlike the Harvard students, the students from HKUST had little or no exposure todesign thinking and methods prior to the

comes to collaboration. The students felt thatthe American system offered benefits in learning collaborative problem-solving skills throughouttheir coursework. Virginia Tech students found that they could contribute to the conference in areas of bothprocess and leadership. Following the guidance of an advisor, Dr. Pradeep Raj, Professor ofAerospace Engineering, students incorporated lessons learned pertaining to leadership fromcreating their Senior Capstone Projects. They felt that this allowed them to embrace the themeof the conference while also producing technically sound presentations. UCI students contributedto the conference by demonstrating two specific case studies of product development withemphasis on engineering design

which the students meetsocially with others to talk through their experience. Finally, the chance to work withinternational students or to serve as an ambassador for education abroad provides a way forstudents to integrate their experience abroad into their life on campus.Third, the programs address different domains of the reentry experience. Psychologicalcounseling, which has not been discussed here, is something that many schools offer for studentsstruggling emotionally with their adjustment. La Brack’s course and my project synthesis courseallow students to talk through their behavioral missteps, as well as deal intensively with thecognitive aspect of returning. He has secured more than $1 million in the form of both internal and external grants and research funding. Foroudastan is the faculty advisor, coordinator, and primary fundraiser for EVP teams entering national research project competitions such as the Formula SAE Collegiate Competition, the Baja SAE Race, the SolarBike Rayce, the Great Moonbuggy Race, and the Solar Boat Collegiate Competition. For his concern for and ded- ication to his students, Foroudastan received MTSU awards such as the 2002-03 Outstanding Teaching Award, the 2005-06 Outstanding Public Service Award, and the 2007 Faculty Advisor of the Year

Therequired hands-on experience in Years 1-3 is gained through companion laboratory courses; thecompanion lab course is typically taught by a different instructor than the faculty member who Page 26.153.4is teaching the lecture course. In addition, projects may be assigned in lecture courses that donot have a companion lab course. In Year 4, students are required to enroll in a capstone designcourse, which is an individual rather than a team project. The laboratory courses and

guidingstudents’ learning strategies [9], it is useful to understand the impact of internationalcollaborative engineering education on students’ epistemological development.Literature ReviewConsidering the significance of international cooperative efforts on engineering education, there have been multiple initiatives to facilitate international collaboration. The types ofinternational collaboration include branch campuses, cross-border collaborative arrangementssuch as student and faculty exchange, dual degrees, joint capstone projects, etc. [10]Multiple studies have been conducted to understand the organization, implementation, andimpact of international collaborative programs, identified the specific benefits andopportunities of international

Her projects involve the study of student perceptions, beliefs and attitudes towards becoming engineers and scientists, and their problem solving processes. Other projects in the Benson group include effects of student-centered active learning, self-regulated learning, and incor- porating engineering into secondary science and mathematics classrooms. Her education includes a B.S. Page 26.874.1 in Bioengineering from the

existing UW study abroad infrastructure.Learning TheoryEngineering Rome incorporates project-based experiential learning, which has shown to be atype of active learning that is crucial for the development of an appreciation for lifelong learning.Lenschow14 explains that: “Project-based learning (PBL) is winning ground in industry and at a slower rate in universities and colleges. PBL is pedagogically based on constructivist learning in a setting represented by Kolb’s learning cycle. Kolb observed that students learn in four different ways: Kolb’s idea is that the cycle shall be repeated. The cycle is best started with concrete experience, proceeding to abstraction.”14The basic classroom premise of the course involves

Based upon this structure, several engineering programs haveresponded using various methods to address these global competencies. Georgia TechnologicalUniversity, for example, offers a Global Studies Certificate that focuses on international relationsand the global economy through language training in addition to a capstone course and 26 weeks Page 26.930.3of study abroad.
