secondary school physics classes,Maria and Romuald 11 found that computer simulations improved students’ understanding ofphysical phenomena as well as analytical and creative thinking skills.In another study, Zacharias and Anderson 12 investigated the effects of computer simulations onstudents’ conceptual understanding of physics, specifically mechanics, waves/optics, and thermalphysics. They presented computer simulations to the students prior to performing real-worldlaboratory experiments. Through pre-post conceptual tests and semi-structured interviews,Zacharias and Anderson 12 found that computer simulations helped students predict and explainthe physical phenomena in subsequent real-world laboratory experiments, and that computersimulations

Engineering Laboratory. The highschool students purchase supplies for the mousetrap car from Home Depot and must keeptheir budget to $10. At night, students work on group projects that include designing andbuilding robots using LEGO Mindstorms NXT.To recruit students, we created a partnership between our College and five community-based out-of-school time programs in Southern California. By working with communityorganizations, we have reached highly motivated students who have a strong aptitude forscience and mathematics. Over the past 11 years, 233 students from 73 different highschools in the Greater Los Angeles Area have participated in SECOP. We have receivedover $500.000 in funding from foundations and engineering-based corporations

At NJIT the curriculum has a space theme and is aligned with New Jersey CoreCurriculum Content Standards. Students study the properties of space, analyze and predict howobjects move on earth and in space, investigating how people live and survive in space. Inaddition to classroom lessons, students participate in hands-on activities, laboratory experiments,team-build exercises, and go on field trips. interested and qualifiedstudents prepared to enter STEM careers must be increased.One of the reasons for declining enrollment in many STEM programs is that students are oftenturned off by the way these subjects are taught, with traditional classroom lectures and “cook-book” type laboratory experiences that provide little opportunity to actively engage in creative,real-world problem solving. Engineers and scientists are problem solvers— individuals whoskillfully apply their knowledge to tackle real-world problems by designing experiments,building prototypes, analyzing and interpreting data, and presenting experimental results topeers, supervisors and customers.
