vision, quality assurance, manufacturing science, andprocess control. Most simply, small (∼1 cm2) solar cells can be characterized by pointmeasurements such as open-circuit voltage, photocurrent, efficiency, and spectral response. However, solar cells, including large-area devices (∼ 100 cm2) and modules, can be analyzed inmuch more detail by scanning and probing the solar cell to map the localized electrical andoptical characteristics and performance in two dimensions. Here we describe the adaptation ofan inexpensive (∼$100) desktop laser engraver and a low-cost CCD camera for 2-D profiling ofsolar cells based on light-beam induced current, spectral response, surface roughness topography, grain structure and texture, and reflectivity. We also use

testing (UT). The sound energypropagates through the test specimen in the form of waves. When the waves face any discontinuityor crack, some part of the energy is reflected due to the acoustic impedance mismatch [8] at thepoint of cracks. The transducer captures the reflected signal and transforms it into the electricalsignal which is displayed on a screen. By analyzing the signal, one can easily obtain thequantitative information about the size, location and orientation of the crack. A schematic view ofa typical UT system is shown in figure 1. A macro-badge assigned to an individualcourse will reflect one of the four levels of competence starting at the lowest passing level ofAdequate Performance (AP) followed by Proficient (P), Mastery - Excellent (ME1), and Mastery– Exceptional (ME2) along with a letter grade. The paper concludes with an assessment discussion, also including how accreditation bodiessuch as ABET, ATMAE or Middle States should and could see this type of credential assignmentefforts.IntroductionEven though it was an exciting concept a few years ago with the possibility of offering analternative to traditional methods, the badge

To put in anutshell, the integration of soft skill development into manufacturing simulations consists thefollowing steps: (1) students conducted a manufacturing simulation, (2) student soft skills weremeasured, (3) students attended soft skill development workshops, (4) students conducted moremanufacturing simulations using what they learned from the workshop, (5) student soft skillswere measured again, (6) student change in soft skills were compared and project evaluated, (7)researchers drew conclusions and reflect on the project. The following sections will discuss thesesteps in detail.3. Course and Project Components3.1

]. Firms established in theU.S. have decided to keep manufacturing here in North America (N.A.), and countries in Europehave decided to move to U.S. manufacturing organizations. In N.A. there is a return ofmanufacturing, though not strong. The reshoring pattern does not reflect the reported trend bythe media and politicians, but this may indicate increased decisions to not send existingproduction to offshore facilities. Manufacturing organizations should take an active role in improving their workforcethrough P-20 life-long learning approaches [8]. Manufacturing organizations are facing an agingsociety. Countries with aging workforces will have employees needing lifelong learningopportunities as their companies will need to retrain and

also very promising.Participants were given the opportunity to add their reflections on the studio workshops. Askedabout what they liked the most about the workshop, a recurrent comment was that they enjoyedthe opportunity to interact with educators from other institutions and professionals in the field ofAM. Another major highlight was the usefulness of the hands-on aspect of the workshops, including the process of putting together the 3D Printers as well as the chance to design an objectof interest. When asked what they would recommend changing about the workshops, a few participantssuggested to (i) allocate more time towards the hands-on activities (ii) reduce the number of “talks”by presenters, and (iii) add a component of training related

were thrilled with their newly acquired practical skills and took pride in their workas reflected in their report. The feedback received from a particular student after a week’sinternship training in a manufacturing plant, stated how proud he was with the prior acquiredknowledge and skills that he gained through the course that has impressed his trainer which inturn has motivated him to further enhance his knowledge in manufacturing; summed it all.5. ConclusionsThe goal of manufacturing courses in engineering education is to enable the students to selectand assess different manufacturing alternatives for a given product using Design forManufacturing and Assembly (DFM/A) methodologies. Learning-by-Doing approach mightseem to be more demanding

machining and steel for welding. • The cost of the materials should not be significantly increased from the current year’s lab. Each team submitted a report describing the proposed product and the sequence of lab activitiesneeded to fabricate each component. Each team also presented a 5-minute “sales pitch” to theirclassmates. The students peer evaluated the projects in four categories: feasibility, cost, presentation quality, and appeal. The highest scoring project (Fig. 5) was created in thefabrication lab the following year (spring semester 2018). Overall, the reflection essays anddesign project established the grade for the hands-on component.Figure 5: The winning lab design project was a Christmas Tree consisting of a milled aluminum“tree” (1

Tomography for the programmablecomponents. A look into the future will be covered.Presentation #5Title: Surface Characterization Methods for Modern ManufacturingAbstract: Surfaces of materials play a key role in many technologies ranging from semiconductordevices, to optical components, to medical implants, to machined metal parts. Surface featuresand characteristics determine optical properties (reflection and light scattering), adherence ofcoatings, susceptibility to contamination and corrosion, wear, friction and lubrication, sealing, thermal contact, wetting properties, and appearance. Engineering of surfaces is important in solarcells, fluidic systems, MEMS, and optics; and poor surface quality is a major limitation of manyrapid prototyping

failure, and seek out growth opportunities.Similarly, Cutts, et. al18, conducted a study in their introductory programming course at theUniversity of Glasgow. Students in the course received one or more of three tools designed to be“mindset interventions,” i.e., to help students shift from a fixed to a growth mindset. The firsttool was a series of workshops taught by the tutors, guiding the students in reflecting on theirexperiences so far in the course and how they fit into a fixed or growth mindset. The second toolwas a handout listing resources, tools, and tips successful computing students frequently use toget unstuck. This handout would be referenced by the tutors whenever they helped a student, guiding them towards a recognition that they
