detail and complete a written report. The required sections of the report include an overall introduction of the history and currentstatus of the engineering material, and an in-depth description of the structure, properties, processing, and applications (performance) of the material. To encourage a higher level ofcritical thinking, the students also evaluate current research applied to their material (either inprocessing, or altering its microstructure), and, in the process, gain an appreciation andunderstanding of recent advancements in their material using new technologies. In the secondhalf of the semester, each group gives an oral presentation with hands-on demonstrations inclass. The presentation date depends on the relevance of the selected

Steven has also been very interested in educational pedagogies since 1996 when he was the first person at UM to use clickers. He was also the first person at UM to reject clickers. Almost 20 years later, he has, once again, embraced clicker technology now that he has eliminated lectures and has time in class for peer instruction.Dr. Shanna R. After the activity, the professors independently evaluated the team documents using adesign metric (e.g. RADD – Requirements, Analysis, Documentation, Drawings).A correlation was found between previous internship experience and an increased ability todesign and document this skill. This correlation appeared in both MET and EET disciplines. There were consistent results between the faculty members, using the RADD metric. Aconclusion from this work is that participation in internships as an undergraduate positivelycontributes to student’s design abilities.IntroductionEngineering design

other disciplines has evolved substantially1. It isinteresting to note that its breadth has increased dramatically not least because the number ofcommercially available materials has increased manifold in the last three decades. Teachingabout materials has therefore to cope with increasing content, and does so in a context where thecompetition for space in the engineering curricula by other disciplines is fierce.Interdisciplinarity is being pursued at both undergraduate2 and graduate3 levels. The search forinterdisciplinary knowledge has long been identified as mandatory for today’s technological andinnovation leaders. This is one of the goals of INCOSE, the CDIO Initiative and the multiplegraduate level programs worldwide. Akay calls in his

As such, students who arefuture engineers must develop skills sets for a changing technological environment where secure, lifetime jobs have become nonexistent in the new global economy. Effective pedagogies helpfacilitate lifelong learning because they develop self regulation which allows for ongoingrevision of intellectual ideas and innovations. Early human advancement was tied tothe ability of humans to understand the materials tetrahedron and apply it to find new materialshaving desirable properties for some application.Despite this call from NSF, and the aligned history of human civilization and materials, there arefew university MSE departments3 that offer students coursework that combine societal aspectsand engineering concepts in a laboratory setting. Engineering is a professional practice thatexists to solve societal problems, and having an understanding of how materials sciences iswoven into technological advancements to solve human problems is essential to development ofa well- rounded engineer, and aligned to the ABET Criteria, especially
