The Fall classes were larger and majority of students in the Fall class are newFreshmen. The Winter class is smaller and consists of a mixture of students who are in Pre-engineering or were originally admitted with significantly weaker background in mathematics andhave been taking many prerequisite classes such as Algebra and Pre-calculus. The textbook usedfor the class is the same textbook that Wright State used [8] and the class has been taught by anengineering faculty member since the first offering. Important factors in student attrition from STEM disciplinesinclude: 1) instructional experiences such as first-year Mathematics courses and facultyexpectations [1][2] and 2) individual self-efficacy, epistemologies, and goal orientations [2][3].In order to enhance student cognitive and affective outcomes and retain students in STEMdisciplines, undergraduates have been used as Learning Assistants (LAs), course UTAs, and labUTAs with positive results [4][5][6]. For example, UTAs used in an inquiry-based generalchemistry laboratory context have similar student content knowledge gains as GTAs in the sameposition [5]. students fromfreshman through junior levels using a carefully redesigned curriculum of engineering sciencecore courses (ESCC) and a blended set of applied laboratories. ESCC consists of six core coursestaught by teams of ME faculty with clearly set educational objectives and managed by acoordinator and trained teaching assistants. Though essay type examination questions candemonstrate positive learning outcomes, multiple choice questions are better to pinpoint areas ofconceptual difficulties. After designing and adopting ESCC in 2006, faculty agreed that carefullydesigned multiple choice questions should form an integral part for all examinations in coreclasses. laboratory spaces used by the center.If successful, a student will be Calculus ready for the fall semester of their first-year. Theintervention is producing students who have higher pass rates in Calculus 1, and higher GPA.However, for the first cohort we did not find that these higher rates were statistically significant.Still, by accelerating Calculus readiness and providing a learning environment that promotesgeneral college readiness, we should have reduced time-to-graduation and hope to showimproved knowledge mastery in later courses, especially those that are Calculus or Mathematicsintensive.Enrolled StudentsThe first cohort entered the program in Summer 2014. Several hands-on activities wereimplemented in this program, and it is clear that some were more beneficial than others. Forexample, the activity to calculate the coefficient of restitution (COR) between various balls andvarious surfaces was hands-on and similar to a laboratory experiment. Gramopadhye’s research focuses on solving human-machine systems design problems and modeling human performance in technologically complex systems such as health care, aviation and manufacturing.
