Active and collaborative learning (ACL) methods, such as jigsaw andgallery walk, are used for effectively engaging students and promoting self-learning. Initialassessments of its first deployment in Spring 2018 showed positive outcomes for its feasibility.Although this module was developed for an undergraduate junior/senior course at USD, MENG445 - Introduction to Robotics, its generic format makes it suitable for graduate level courseadoption as well. The second deployment of this module is scheduled for this Spring 2019 termin March. Assessment results will be collected and presented at the ASEE meeting in June 2019.The ACL Module DesignResearch studies have shown
2019 class of Mechanical Engineering Design at Chico State, a hands-on semesterproject titled Electric Ceiling Hoist was facilitated through the weekly two-hour activity time. The assignment and outcomes of this project are the focus of this paper and a detailed account ispresented herein. For the first five weeks of the semester, the two-hour weekly activities wereindividual assignments that focused on component design, report writing, and utilizing softwaresuch as excel or Matlab. These assignments paralleled the lecture and stepped up in difficultyand requirements. The last of these individual assignments was a paper design for a simplifiedversion of the semester project. The motivation here was that every student must conduct theprescribed

the overall video views occurredprior to the switch and only 13% occurred after the switch. For the Introduction to ComputerScience course, all students viewed at least one video with an average of 13.3 views per student. The number of videos viewed per student after the switch to online showed a slight increaserelative to the fall 2019. In both classes, students reported only watching videos on topics thatthey found most difficult. Videos on more fundamental or more difficult topics had higherviewership. Results suggest that students were using the videos as supplemental materials andthat the videos were successful in helping students master the course material.IntroductionStudents entering the University of Idaho, and universities in general

Both were made available usingthelearning management system, Instructure Canvas, throughout the semesterIn the subsequent semester offering (Spring 2019), the course was taught in a flipped-classroom50:50 mixed-mode format. The course material delivered remained exactly the same as that ofthe face-to-face semester, except roughly 50% was delivered online. The students attended 1weekly 75 minute session in the mixed-mode model, as opposed to 150 minute (three 50 min),weekly sessions in the face-to-face format. The course was structured into weekly modules(Figure 2). For the online content, instructional videos were created by the instructor for weeklytopics. Following a method presented for an undergraduatedynamics class at the 2018 ASEE Annual Conference, subject matter in this class was dividedinto three categories – preliminary, required, and supplementary topics. Each category includedmultiple sub-topics, with a total of 13 sub-topics for the whole semester. Students were quizzedon each subtopic. Students could not take quizzes on topics in the next category unless theyreceived a score of 88% or better on all the quizzes in the current
