setup and boundary conditions. This greatly cuts down on the time requiredto troubleshoot an experimental apparatus and allows for a more efficient use of time. Since the design project is a continuation of all the past years of research, the saved timeallows for things such as automation and novel techniques to aid in the conducting of the currentresearch. Additionally, side research areas and problems can be developed that, at this point, should be entirely original and worthy of a graduate thesis. To this end, the senior level projectshould far exceed expectations and be at a leading level. Additionally, as there has beenextensive practice on technical writings through the writing of grants and publishable results, thetechnical reports

community proved important [25]. In short, the impact ofundergraduate research experience is tremendous on undergraduate students, graduate mentors, and faculty members. In all, evidence-based practices from previous successful programs and publishedresearch indicate the importance of integration of undergraduates, specially underrepresented andunderserved minority groups, in research to combat challenges to matriculation, retention, graduation, and enrollment in graduate school.ApproachTANMS Engineering Research Center developed a paid eight week research experience forURM and non-URM undergraduate students, suitable for implementation during the academicyear (semester or quarter systems) as well as during the summer months. The eight

fourundergraduate years that students typically use the space.2.3.3 Research and OutreachMany undergraduate and graduate research assistants utilize the Design Studio to support theirwork. We have a strong summer undergraduate research program and summer engineeringinternship program for high school students, and many of these students call the Design Studiohome. The Design Studio is also home to past, present, and pending NSF-funded ResearchExperience for Teachers (RET) and Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs, and allows the department to easily host first year graduate students before their alignment with alab and advisor.2.4 Intellectual PropertyAccording to the University of Delaware Policies and Procedures Manual [5]: “It is

havingexcellent communication and empathy skills. However, because these Board members are allexecutives at prominent engineering firms that employ many of our graduates, it also signaled toour students that the information covered in our training sessions really is of importance to theirfuture employers. For the full explanation of training activities and supporting research, see ourrelated paper, Cognitive Empathy – Making a Better Designer and More Inclusive MechanicalEngineering [7].We have requested a modest increase to the course fees for the courses in which our training istaking place so that we do not have depend on outside funds to continue to hold the training eachyear and to institutionalize the program. We also plan to revise the catalog

, model-based design with a balance between theory and industry best practices. He collaborated extensively with the Xerox Mechanical Engineering Sciences Laboratory (MESL), an offshoot of Xerox PARC, during this time. At Rensselaer, he graduated 37 M.S. students and 20 Ph.D. students, and authored over 30 refereed journal articles and over 50 refereed conference papers. In 2006 at RPI, he received the two highest awards conferred for teaching: the RPI School of Engineering Education Excellence Award and the RPI Trustees’ Outstanding Teacher Award. Over the past 20 years, he has conducted hands-on, integrated, customized, mechatronics workshops for practicing engineers nationally and internationally, e.g., at Xerox

structural boundary conditions. This systemsapproach was adopted by graduating mechanical engineering senior design students who electedto compete in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aero Design Competition, duringwhich they developed a system level diagram for their system. They initially developed a layoutof the RC aircraft system, then continuously updated the system level diagram throughout thedesign and the realization processes. The system level diagram was proven to be instrumentalduring the synthesis, tradeoff, analysis, fabrication, assembly, and testing phases of the project. The system diagram was also used for management, supply chain, and quality assurance aspectsof the project. Overall, students reported substantial gain in

During graduate and post-doctoral work at the University of Washington, Dr. Perry was involved in the development of a 7 degree-of-freedom (dof) arm exoskeleton, a 5-dof high precision po- sitioning robot, a 5-dof surgical simulator, a novel 2-dof surgical grasper, and a 1-dof powered prosthesis for early-stance gait improvements in trans-tibial amputees. Following post-doctoral work at the Univer- sity of Washington Biorobotics Lab, he spent 6 years in the Department of Rehabilitation Technologies at Tecnalia Research & Innovation in San Sebastian, Spain, where he managed R&D activities for the development of low-cost
