withdigital badges starting with our initial exploration of their viability.Early explorationThe initial motivation for our exploration of badging was our perception that students aremissing out on key skills that would serve them well in their careers. Early benchmarking alsoshowed the success being enjoyed by other programs such as work at Purdue University [8] andthe work of other schools like Robert Morris University [9]. Our particular departmental cultureled us to survey the 12 members of our industrial advisory board. This group was evenly split onthe idea of offering badges. Reasons cited against the badging effort included: 1) manycompanies already offer extensive in-house training on relevant but non-technical skills, 2) it isnot clear if

, the retention rate and graduation rate ofundergraduate students in STEM fields are typically low and there is room for furtherimprovement. The low retention and graduation rates may be due to not only the rigorouscurriculum of the STEM majors, but also economic and academic difficulties those studentsencounter. Financial support to students alone may not be sufficient to address the problems. The National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM scholarship program was established toencourage higher education institutions to develop academic activities to support undergraduatestudents in STEM fields to improve their retention and graduation rates, and further increasingtheir potential of career placement and graduate studies. abilities.Authors such as Pascarella & Terenzini, Tinto, and Thomas have argued that student success willtranspire in higher education if all learners are integrated into the social and academic fabric of therespective institution [35], [38], [39]. Research suggest that having additional resources on campussuch as peer tutoring, academic advising, personal and career counselling, and disability servicesmay be compensatory in various ways [36]. For example, it can assist disadvantaged studentsovercome potential lack of academic information, cultural capital, or academic preparedness [25],[38]. In a study conducted by Bauman et al. in 2004, the likelihood of students using campusservices was analyzed [26]. Results indicate that three quarters of the

proved to be more successful at project completion [4]. Whether inundergraduate studies or in future careers, there are obvious advantages to possessing goodwriting skills as they may actually improve design skills [5]. Given the profound importance andrequirement for demonstrated technical communication, ironically there is not a specific coursein the mechanical engineering curriculum dedicated to teaching technical writing. As a result, students may find themselves in their Capstone Program suddenly expected to write professionalengineering design reports and test procedures with only the experience of lower divisionlaboratory reports and English essays. To better prepare students for the workforce and facilitatea more cohesive writing

, use digital media toadvance their academic careers and have been exposed to this technology for all of their lives. This Generation Z cohort, students roughly between the ages of 17-22 have particular learningstyles and it is important as engineering educators to modify our teaching methods to best meettheir needs. Kalkhurst [1] writes that GenZ students are disrupting many ingrained practices ineducation and that colleges and universities are forced to adapt at a rapid pace or becomeirrelevant. GenZ students are accomplished self-learners, can process information at a fast paceand it is important to be brief and visual to capture and hold their attention [2].Seemiller and Grace [3] highlight an important characteristic of GenZ learners: a

was a technical communication course offered to Mechanical Engineering students. ENG 110 was the introductory course for the Mechanical Engineering program. The Engineering Librarian collaborated with these two courses during Fall 2018. Despite changes in instructors for both of these courses, progress has been made in adding a lesson plan to each course. In EGL 120, students were introduced to the literature of their discipline, specifically standards. In ENG 110, students were introduced to business and industry research as they begin considering future careers. • HUM 310 (Spring Senior Year). This was the engineering ethics course taken by all seniors in engineering programs. The
