, such as socio-economic status, make this institution unique. Students tend to comefrom low socio-economic status; 24% of our students are Pell grant eligible with householdincomes under $30,000. The state subsidizes the cost of education to in-state students byproviding a reduction in tuition of approximately 90% relative to the full cost of tuition to out-of-state students. The in-state tuition is one of the lowest in the country among four year nationalresearch universities, and provides access to engineering for a high number of students who maynot otherwise afford it. outcomes and observations on adopting the new method.Based on the results of numerous informal classroom experiments and hundreds of informaldiscussions with students, it was determined that most students do not use effective studystrategies to fully understand key concepts and to master problem solving techniques. Instead,the goal of their current studying and test taking strategies is to “maximize partial credit.” Thesestrategies work as follows. 1. Memorize problems from the homework, in-class examples, or previous exams. 2. Match each problem on the exam to one of the memorized problems that most closely resembles it. 3. Write down the memorized solution, making adjustments along the way so that the solution looks more relevant

Atthe end of each section, a “Comments/Suggestions” box is included, where the students areencouraged to write their comments. These surveys are administered typically at 1/3 (Week 5)and 2/3 (Week 10) of the semester.Based on the findings of each survey, the instructor makes a brief presentation during class,where the most frequent comments/issues are discussed along with actions to address them. Thethird survey further serves as a measure of the efficiency of the adopted actions from the secondsurvey. we had originally planned to prohibit quarter-and three-quarter length joints between deltas, allowing only full side or half joints, to make calculationseasier, but this was too limiting in the creation of successful designs. We also consideredincreasing the internal area requirement from 100 quarter-deltas to 150.
