learners is an often-stated goal of higher education institutions andprofessional organizations. The ability to develop and master a specific body of knowledge is acommon attribute of both academia (peer-review discipline activities) and professions. Thecontribution of lifelong learners is paramount to the success of these institutions. The UnitedStates Military Academy at West Point presents a unique opportunity to blend the developmentof lifelong learning in our graduates in both their identity as an undergraduate engineeringstudent and a member of the profession of arms. The West Point Strategic Plan (2015-2021)explicitly identifies that the development of professional engineers and Army Officers is notmutually exclusive. The two goals are

Immersion TripsOur International Programs Office offers various study abroad opportunities, including a 10-daycultural immersion trip offered during the summer between the junior and senior year. Eventhough these trips are short in duration, they offer a high-impact, motivational event in thestudent’s educational experience. We identified students that would be on the same seniorcapstone project teams and planned a cultural immersion trip that would be technically related totheir UAS capstone project. This had three benefits: (1) developing cultural awareness; (2)learning technical information which would aid in their UAS capstone project; and (3) a team-building experience for the capstone team. We tried two different formats for the trips. The

military and veteran students believe their military experiences providedthem with the knowledge (skills and/or abilities) and discipline (will and/or motivation) toovercome obstacles, execute plans and achieve personal and group goals. Unfortunately largenumbers of veterans describe encountering significant obstacles while using their earned VAbenefits to pursue higher education opportunities. The key issue to mitigating those barriersappears to be how best to improve veteran student efficacy as it relates to their capability andmotivation in pursuit of higher education goals the students themselves deem valuable. The authorshave adapted a STEM mentorship program structure to focus on veteran students pursuing STEMdegrees in the College of

Until statewide and institutionalcommittees develop and state institutions implement a coordinated process, however, the JSTevaluation process will continue to be challenging. The following paragraphs illustrate how the JST evaluation process has been applied at WCU.JST ReviewsSixty JSTs, stripped of identity information, were randomly chosen from the files of the DMP todetermine patterns in the types and quantities of credit recommendations and awards. deadlines in a design course allows veterans to quickly develop a schedule and supporting documentation to best facilitate team efforts. 2. Lack of comfort with the open-endedness of a design project. Military leadership provides missions and objectives to subordinates. Subordinates develop their own mission plans and objectives and push to the next subordinate level. The process continues downward until it reaches the lowest level. With the exception of coordinating certain elements, the method of mission accomplishment is open-ended. This provides lower military units with the flexibility to adapt and accomplish the objectives in whatever manner they see fit. 3. Inherent reluctance of students to begin
