Principles of SustainableEngineering for application in civil and environmental engineering (CEE) courses, and wasrecently updated through systematic literature review to reflect a broader set of evaluationcriteria. that thesense of belonging in women students is consistently higher in departments where they arerepresented in higher numbers9. At Arizona State University, the long-term effects to a suite ofstrategies designed to increase sense of belonging were found to be an increase in retention from0.9% per year to 1.6% per year in their undergraduate engineering cohorts from 1998 to 201310.Four areas were identified at the University of Washington as being important to thedevelopment of community and belonging of ethnic minority students: co-curricular activities,peer support, faculty/department support, and residence programs. ExperiencesResults The study revealed distinct pathways between, and in some cases, even among native andnon-native students. While the majority of respondents were exposed to some level of rigor intheir respective curricula, the participants had diverse reflections about the rigor of the classesthat they took. Some participants also had more detailed remarks about a particular instructor orexperience that inspired an interest in STEM. This experience seemed to be more salient forsome respondents than the rigor of their science and mathematics courses. demonstrated some degree of naivet´e in thinking that the small size would automatically translate into afully accountable cohort without any social scaffolding by us. Future programming could help alleviate thisissue by adding in explicit cohort building activities such as social events at the beginning of the program.Improved tracking of attendanceWe largely view surveys as being reflective of the minimum number of attendees that are present. Duringthe 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 program years, attendance was tracked by the number of surveys completedthroughout the program.
