S-STEM funding has influenced educational practices in the ERE department.The lessons learned from SLS program have informed the ERE department Diversity andRetention Plan required by the new university accreditation process, whose purpose is to increaseretention of diverse students in all majors. One part of the plan that was informed by the SLSproject is the implementation of a peer mentoring program for first year engineering (ERE)students. The peer mentoring program was started due to the SLS project outcomes thatindicated the importance of peer mentoring. Assessment of the new peer mentoring program isnot yet complete. Engineering Academic Boot Camp. Students were expected to secure their coursetextbooks and materials and do their best to keep up with the assignments for the duration of thefive week period. The Engineering Academic Boot Camp included mentoring opportunitiesbetween participants and faculty, corporate partners, undergraduate and graduate students aswell as team building activities across cultures. study, we compare narratives shared by 36 potential role models and 29 mentorsin STEM and how those narratives might differentially impact the viewer based on their identity-based and culturally-situated themes. Our results suggest that, despite the many contextualdifferences (e.g., age, point in professional career, race, ethnicity, etc.), role models and mentorsshare many of the same kinds of narratives around their values and aspirations. However, theapparent differences are often identity-relevant, and the role models’ narratives generated deepemotional responses in the researchers as viewers.
