In2004, Caucasian men composed of 69.3% of the science and engineering degrees whereasAfrican-American men accounted for 5.9%.1 African-American men are still disproportionatelyrepresented in the engineering and science fields. In order to address this need, Virginia Tech’sCollege of Engineering has developed The VT PACT, a retention program for first-year African-American men in engineering. The details of the bridge building competitioncan be found in the website3.The competition provides an opportunity for high school students in Southwest Georgia, workingas a team of 2 or 3, to solve realistic engineering problems by designing and building astructurally efficient balsa wood bridge according to very demanding specifications. Thestructural efficiency is measured by the ratio of the breaking load to the weight of the bridge. Apanel of judges from industry and research organizations conducts the testing and declares thewinners. WOC.For students of color, campus climate issues around race, class, and gender shape their highereducation learning environment. Research suggests hostile campus climates are associated withstudents of color leaving STEM fields before graduating. Such barriers can be more pronouncedfor WOC who often experience a “double bind” of race and gender marginalization whennavigating the STEM culture. Therefore, it is important that educators understand experiences ofWOC and what is needed to improve students’ experiences in order to minimize the performancegap in key indicators (e.g., retention, achievement and persistence). -program student survey designed to measure perception ofover-all usefulness of the research internship program. Results show that the research internshipprogram was successful in its achieving its goals of helping students prepare for transfer, solidifytheir choice of major, increase their confidence in applying for other internships, and enhance theirinterest in pursuing graduate degrees. Overall, students were satisfied with the program, and wouldrecommend it to a friend.
