into graduate STEM fields,• Develop an evaluation model to investigate the effectiveness of partnershipsThe SEAGEP strategic plan was guided by the eight design principles to expand highereducation capacity described by BEST 14: institutional leadership, targeted recruitment, engagedfaculty, personal attention, peer support, enriched research experience, bridging to the next level, and continuous evaluation. With regard to institutional leadership, it has been shown thatsupport from top officials is crucial for the initiative to be successful. 1,15 With this in mind, commitment to the goals of the alliance was secured from top officials at each of the partnerinstitutions, providing the foundation upon which the collaboration has been built. biological reactor systems7. This tooldevelopment will continue and it is imperative that environmental engineering undergraduateand graduate students learn how to use these tools properly. Some efforts have been maderecently to provide an innovative course to undergraduate engineering students that have notcompleted coursework in Biology1. In addition, the expansion and refinement of our basicunderstanding of microbiology as it pertains to environmental engineering needs to be taught toyounger students in K-12. As a priority, the NSF has identified the need for more engineers andscientists with training in the interdisciplinary areas of nanotechnology and biotechnology. Tofacilitate this training, the NSF is pursuing two new research priority areas

Engineering is among the best in the country, offering outstanding degreeprograms and preparing students for exciting and rewarding careers. Our graduates are heavilyrecruited for positions in a variety of settings, including business, construction, transportation, hardware and software development, and design. The College comprises 12 departments offering18 BS, 17 MS, and 14 Ph.D. degree programs and conducts the largest undergraduate andgraduate engineering education and research programs in the State. The College continues torank among the nation's leading colleges in the total number of degrees awarded, the number ofdegrees awarded to women and minorities, the quality of the graduate programs, and researchand extension activities. Our fall 2006

project. The results of the project: hardware, software and documentationare presented to the faculty in the form of a senior thesis. In completing their senior thesisprojects, the students get to interact with each other, with vendors and manufacturers of softwareand hardware components and spend a great deal of time on the internet searching forinformation on manufacturer specifications and the best components and vendors. For thecapstone project, the computer engineering students use the science, engineering and generaleducation backgrounds acquired over the four year period in the design and implementation. Thisexperience enhances the ability of the students to work on teams. It is hoped that the assessmentdata when collected and analyzed for

-Americans. In2004, Caucasian men composed of 69.3% of the science and engineering degrees whereasAfrican-American men accounted for 5.9%.1 African-American men are still disproportionatelyrepresented in the engineering and science fields. In order to address this need, Virginia Tech’sCollege of Engineering has developed The VT PACT, a retention program for first-year African-American men in engineering. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: 1) to discuss how the booktitled, The Pact, written by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt was used asa framework to develop the The VT PACT and 2) to discuss the impact of The VT PACT for the2005-2006 academic year and the 2006 fall semester.2 The researchers provide brief backgroundon

Within thatprogram, NG is extremely proud that the company female population over the period of time is30 % and the total of minorities and females approaches 50%. In addition NG has a growingNew Graduate Leadership Training Program run out of our Baltimore facility that has also beenrecognized as “Best Manufacturing Practices” where 52% of the almost 250 participants in thelast three years are women and minorities.Northrop Grumman is the second largest employer for Engineers graduating from the NC StateUniversity College of Engineering over the past four years, having hired in excess of 75 newgraduate engineers for the Baltimore location alone. Georgia Space Grant Consortium. The details of the bridge building competitioncan be found in the website3.The competition provides an opportunity for high school students in Southwest Georgia, workingas a team of 2 or 3, to solve realistic engineering problems by designing and building astructurally efficient balsa wood bridge according to very demanding specifications. Thestructural efficiency is measured by the ratio of the breaking load to the weight of the bridge. Apanel of judges from industry and research organizations conducts the testing and declares thewinners. The competition is held in two categories, short (22”) and long (33”) span, with theweight of the bridge limited to 28.3 gm (1 ounce) and 50 gm respectively. The top three

Per the Maui District DOE Standardized Test Scores for School Year2002-2003, 35% of Maui’s Native Hawaiian 8th graders scored below average on their MathSAT and 44% below the HCPS-II Math standards 6.A best practices review was made of model programs nationwide designed to encourage middleschool girls of under-represented race/ethnic ancestry in STEM. The existing research suggeststhat girls experience a precipitous decline in interest in math and science beginning with themiddle school years, the main barriers being the perception of these subjects as boring, adisconnect with the relevance of these fields, and a sudden decline in confidence in

simultaneously the objectives of financial success while operating in an environmentally sound manner and a socially responsible way.3.2 Attracting Minority Students to EngineeringThe same caliber of research on women is not readily available on minority career motivatorstoward engineering. In fact, Black, Hispanic and American Indian/Alaskan Native men may beattracted to engineering at the same rates as white men, but the retention and graduation rates arepoor.18 As already shown, overall college enrollments are low to begin with. Much of the focusfor minority students is on readiness for college, obtaining solid math and science foundations, and paying for college. 9, 19, 20 The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Pre-CollegeInitiative
