programs will be covered.IntroductionMost degree programs that teach building engineering have design opportunities are often less thanideally constructed to reflect practical careers due to relatively few faculty members being trained, or theyhave no similar industry experience necessary to guide students [1]. Consequently in these settings, only asurface level understanding of their value is realized [2]. Many engineering students do not know how toapproach large complex systems due to their exposure to idealistic examples [3]. Additionally, they notcapable of providing critical multi-disciplinary integration of their designs due to the isolated nature oftopics in the classroom [4] [5]. Capstone courses provide a comprehensive evaluation of

reflected in publications such as1, 2, 3. Most recently, “AnInconvenient Truth” has captured the attention of the public, and has brought the environment, and the effects of human activities, to the forefront of many people’s minds4. Now, the media isroutinely filled with articles discussing these topics. Some of these have begun to focus ontechnologies, manufacturing practices, and the products which are produced. A few examplesinclude industrial chemicals5, green solvents6, green consumer products7, and environmentally-benign separations processes8. The historical development of engineering into aprofession highlighted the engineer’s role in social development and progress; the tradeoffsnecessary in engineering decision-making; and the need to anticipate “unintended consequences”and identify stakeholders who may be silent or lack social power.Student learning outcomes are listed in Table 1.Student work included several design projects, with documentation in the form of hand and CADdrawings, written descriptions, and oral presentations; design problem definition assignments;and writing assignments in which students reflected on their experiences and responded toreading assignments. This work was assessed to evaluate achievement of

: Students test their mettle through quizzes, post-test, lab reports, exams, and/or demonstrations of the hands-on activity results, all of which could be summative assessment tools used to compute student grades. Students need to look ahead and reflect back and provide solutions to the challenge. Go Public: Finally, students go public with their findings by presenting and defending their solutions to the challenge. These presentations also allow each student to see other solutions to the same problem to find out that there might be multiple ways to solve the challenges [16].3.2 Challenges in Introduction to STEMThe challenges developed for the Introduction to STEM course are presented in Figure 1;the ones with the

In junior design, it was a requirement, while here it was optional.A questionnaire was carefully designed to get accurate feedback at the end of the semesterfor assessment. The following question was asked relating to the term project: What are your thoughts on the term project? How helpful was it to your learning? Do you recommend assigning it in future classes? In the first year, in spring 2006, the author decided that 10% of the course grade would beassigned to the term project. Subsequently, encouraged by the success obtained, he increased thepercentage to 15%, in Spring 2007, 2008, and 2009, thereby reflecting the importance he gave tothe project as a reliable partial measure of the learning

, 2004)11Design ReviewsDesign reviews were used to assess learning objectives 2-4. Each semester, students work inteams with other students at their university on a design project corresponding to a piece of thewicked problem. Throughout the process, students participate in three design reviews intended toidentify strengths and weaknesses in design processes and guide students’ design developmenttoward better, more defensible, and more sustainable design solutions. We used the Initiate,Design, Execute, Assess, Learn, & Show (IDEALS) framework as a guide for assessment ofthese design activities.12 As part of each design review, students answer reflection questions ontheir progress to date. At the end of the semester, students perform in-class

), called for a Decade of Education for sustainabledevelopment from 2005 to 2015 [1]. This worldwide reflection is creating a new engineeringeducation culture. Engineering educators are observing significant shifts in societal expectationsof the engineering profession to help address immediate and longer-term sustainable developmentchallenges. According to the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO),engineering plays a significant role in planning and building projects that preserve naturalresources, are cost-efficient, and support human and natural environments [2]. The NationalAcademy of Engineering formulated in 2004 its vision of the engineer of 2020 [3]. This reportoutlines a number of aspirational goals where it sees the

MostABET accredited undergraduate engineering programs have at least one course incontrols systems analysis and design. The exception is civil engineering which generallydoes not require a controls course. Additionalcompetencies reflect desired student outcomes at a program level. These competencies are listedin the appendix. A student’s grade is determined by the number of competencies that they havemastered by the end of the semester. Students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate

In the latter case, the team must committo regular meetings to coordinate lecture and homework assignments in order to minimizeoverlap in material and provide a smooth transition from one instructor to the next. In reflection, the requirements of team teaching are no different than the team building

student may havevarious learning styles and most people have many learning styles. McKeachie15 reflected thattoo many teachers think of students as a featureless mass; too many rarely vary their teachingmethods, thinking that the method by which they were taught is best for everyone. However, learning styles are preferences and habits of learning that have been learned and that everyone iscapable of going beyond the particular style preferred at the time. Also learning styles do notmake as much difference as the student’s prior knowledge, intelligence, and motivation and thatthese characteristics are learnable. So it is important for both teachers and students to realize thatlearners always encounter many situations that are not adapted to their

In the current version of the Robot Olympics, there are five different events: LineFollower, Lane Follower, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Hill Climb, and Tug-of-War.
