In Armour College of Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology, we havedeveloped and implemented a college-centered engineering Undergraduate R&D Program thatteaches students the art of conducting research using a comprehensive approach. The students areintroduced to research methods and concepts through a research course, and a series ofcompetitive research project opportunities is provided. In addition, students are required topresent their research findings at a college-wide research expo

Students will learn to work independently and to collaborate with other group membersas they conduct research in specific topics in energy research. Profession” is a one-credit hour course that was originallydeveloped to provide an overview of the different engineering programs at FGCU. Thisoverview was designed to give students a better understanding not only of the various majors,but also what opportunities and responsibilities a career in engineering would have, during theircollege years as well as post-graduation. As a new engineering school at a new University, thefirst offerings of this course were also designed to encourage students to consider engineering asa preferred career choice. As the course evolved and matured, additional information was addedto the curriculum based on topics identified by faculty as necessary skills for engineering majors,including topics such as unit conversions

Facilitating an environment where students studying different disciplines can worktogether should enhance cross-discipline thinking later as well as a greater sense of their ownstrengths in the common career paths of the two disciplines3, 4.The fields of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering have historically worked together5, 6.The US Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies these disciplines as similar, and some overlappingemployment opportunities include: biosciences equipment and supplies manufacturing; scientificresearch and development services

He has also worked with colleagues at Iowa State to develop the educational program ”Boomtown,” with the goal of interesting middle-school girls in com- puter programming. After working with the SWE chapter closely for the past ten years, Will was named advisor for the chapter in the fall of 2013. Will has been an active member of ASEE throughout his pro- fessional career, serving as an officer in his local section from 2002-2007 (Chair in 2005) and attending and publishing at national and sectional conferences

CONCLUSIONIn the three years since it has been offered, this course has proven to be uniquely beneficial tostudents, particularly those who are interested in pursuing careers in medical devicedevelopment. Based on student course evaluations, participants reported the following in Table1 from Fall 2012 – Fall 2014 (five semesters). Moreover, it makes a statement early in the students’academic careers about the importance of connecting courses throughout the curriculum tofacilitate transfer. Other studies provide a detailed description of the LC, including selectioncriteria and an evaluation of its effectiveness.19The LC builds on previous research showing that introducing narrative elements into PS coursesimproves student performance in general as well as in computer programming-related problem-solving skills.6,7,16-19 Our experience shows teaching the PS course in the interdisciplinaryenvironment of a LC
