-learning techniques in electrical engineering (EE) labcourses. These techniques range from simple to more-involved techniques, and my objectivesranged from increasing interactivity during class to tailoring class time to students’ needs andquestions. These various techniques include think-share, think-pair-share, observe and comment,group discussion, and the flipped classroom. Active learning has been shown to be more effectivethan passive learning within a traditional lecture setting. In my courses, these methods have shownincreased student understanding of the differences between mathematical models and physicalrealizations of systems. Adding active learning exercises to these laboratory courses has alsoincreased interactivity among the students

as part of a larger study of student engagement inundergraduate engineering courses at a large public research institution. Seven large, freshman-or sophomore-level, TA-intensive engineering courses (3 Mechanical Engineering courses, 4Electrical Engineering courses) were included, with course enrollment ranging from 41-263students total and TA-led recitations, laboratories or quiz section enrollment ranging from 15 -40. Although TAs did not explicitly provide demographics for this study, the TAs in the sevencourses studies were approximately 67% male (33% female); 50% White (25% Asian, primarilyfrom Chinese and Indian backgrounds, 25% Other Race); and 80% graduate (20%undergraduate). Questions are drawn randomly from a quiz bank where possible to avoidacademic misconduct issues.Students are given the opportunity to integrate domain knowledge and creative problem-solvingskills during their interactive laboratory sessions. This course component was designed around astudio format that allows students to work collaboratively while seeking personalized feedback[7], [8]. Instructors and teaching assistants coach students through weekly assignments inpreparation for a larger design-based project.
