Documenting theseexperiences themselves may be worthy of publication, however, long term assessment of their Page 15.849.4effectiveness is of more interest to the engineering educators, journal editors, and conferencereviewers. Some common papers document outreach activities,24, 28 while others may discuss service-learning projects that involve international experiences.25-27 In one case, two faculty membersinvolved with summer engineering camps for middle school students proposed a paper on theirsummer camp. Although hired in large part dueto our vast industry experience, colleagues have not always been anxious to embrace our input ascredible. This further exacerbates the emotional challenge noted earlier associated with a loss ofexpertise moving from a well established industry career to that of a new engineering educator. In this case though, we have the expertise but we’re not allowed validation by our peers, essentially negating the most positive attribute we have to offer, at least in the first few years.Suggestions in the Area of Instructional ApproachAs is presently done in many engineering technology programs, the educational institutionshould

not immediate, but will waitupon an opportunity when a NEE application/request and an offended senior facultymember on a given committee come into confluence. This could take years, and act likea time bomb and landmine in the NEE’s academic career path.Ironically the NEE may be slow in discerning accumulating hints that all is not well, particularly if still sensing that the director, chair, dean, and/or mentor support them. Many faculty are skilled at hiding their true feelings, and may still present a civil face tothe NEE, even if seething internally. They may smile while proverbially stabbing theNEE in the back. Hints include a repeated pattern of what a senior faculty member doesbeing inconsistent with what he/she has said (unfulfilled

However, as a minority faculty member, additionalchallenges include lack of role models, fitting in, and gaining the respect of male students. Thesechallenges will be further outlined in the full paper. This paper explores ways to confront these challenges. A strong support system, bothprofessionally and personally, is essential. This support system comes in many forms, includingcommunity and university resources. A faculty mentorship program within the university hasbeen very valuable to junior faculty. Being a mentor to female students has also been a way toovercome these challenges. The teacher becomes

Dr. Clyne’s research investigates the mechanical and biochemical interactions among cells and proteins of the blood vessel wall in health and disease. She is particularly interested in endothelial cell mechanics, basement membrane memory of environmental stress, induction of angiogenesis through diseased extracellular matrix, and advanced tissue engineering scaffold design. Dr. Clyne received an NSF CAREER award in 2009, and she is currently funded by NSF, NIH, and the Nanotechnology Institute

arrive at them. The views of fourprofessors will be compared, two of which are new faculty. The other two have decades ofexperience, one being the Chief Academic Officer, the other a senior faculty member who wasalso a multi-year chair of the review committee.A process that appears straightforward to one group can seem daunting to another. For a newfaculty member to navigate the process requires that all involved understand their viewpoint.Similarly, they need to understand the needs of the university and of their own peers. This paperexamines these traits and discusses ways to make the process a better one for the new facultymember. The TaskNew faculty members are faced with many early-career challenges including how to effectivelyteach

University’s first-year engineering program began in the fall of 2000. Within thisprogram, entering students learn basic engineering and technical skills that are applicable to theirengineering and professional careers. Through the completion of the first-year engineeringcourses, students gain, develop and improve their skills in: • Teamwork • Written and oral technical communication • Problem solving • Engineering design • Engineering modeling (numerical, graphical, 3-D) • Engineering analysis (data collection, analysis, description) • Computer software • Interpersonal communication • Basic university skills Page

This survey targeted STEM (Science, Technology,Engineering, and Math) faculty and included questions about mentoring, career satisfaction, andcareer relationships. The participants ranked their responses as strongly disagree, tend todisagree, tend to agree, and strongly disagree. The data contained within this survey will beanalyzed in more detail as the

Many facultymembers use standards in their research and teaching. Awareness of standards may develop in avariety of ways including reading and writing dissertations, journal articles, conference papers, and handbooks. References to standards are also prevalent in bibliographic databases, andcampus websites

engineering assignments. Through a small study, it will analyze whether performancebonuses reduce tardiness in assignment submissions as well as whether a performance bonusimproves student learning through better achievement of course outcomes.IntroductionOne of the most common problems faced by students is procrastination. It is estimated that 95%of all college students procrastinate at some point in their academic career, and 25% of studentsare chronic procrastinators1. This is especially prevalent on long assignments. If an assignmentis not due immediately at the next class session, students wait until either the weekend before orthe night before the assignment is due to start work. This can be very problematic, as byprocrastinating, any problems
