An engineering elective is for engineering seniors on nuclear energy andnuclear engineering. It is intended to prepare students for the workforce and/or graduate studiesin the nuclear engineering field. Institute.We took several measures to promote the Institute. First, publicity materials includingbrochures and a webpage (http://snei.engr.utexas.edu) were developed. We undertooktwo recruitment trips in Fall 2008, one to Texas Southern and another to The Universityof Texas of the Permian Basin. The recruitment presentations were made in the contextof a guest lecture at a survey course. The presentations and recruitment materials focusednot only on the Institute curriculum but also on the careers for which the Institute isgeared to help prepare its graduates.Institute graduates are paid a stipend of $1000 and textbook allowance of $200. Finally,the students will be reimbursed for travel expenses of up to $500 and receive six UT-Austin course credits

Students use the detectors to make measurements, calculateefficiency, determine FWHM, examine secondary interactions, and assess shieldingcharacteristics of materials separating the source and the detector. Our problem sets and writtenexams assess student achievement on calculations relating to these type tasks. And the results aregood. But, what our students never see are the visible photons produced when the gamma raysinteracts with the scintillator crystal, how that light makes its way to a photocathode to produceselectrons, how the electrons numbers are multiplied at different dynodes, and how thoseelectrons generate the pulse that enables radiation detection. The culminating event of the Oral Exams is just a fewweeks before graduation with one student being asked questions (akin to adissertation defense) by three faculty members. Ahead of this, there are writtenexams on the Fundamental Knowledge each semester, and there is another formof the Oral Exam but in a group setting with peer evaluators. This was anindicator used to assess Student Outcome i, the recognition for the need forlifelong learning. In a group setting, a faculty member asked each student a seriesof questions of nuclear engineering facts and concepts. The questions persistedfor 10-15 minutes while faculty member and two other students evaluated thequality of the responses. This was worth 5% of the course
