The MESA Center is also home for several student organizations on our campus,including MAES, SACNAS, and SWE. Over the last two years we have partnered with a nearbyuniversity to direct a NASA sponsored undergraduate research program. The program (CIPAIR)provides opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in ongoing research projects off-campus, as well as to conduct new research projects on campus under the guidance andsupervision of a faculty member.The MESA Center served as a focal point for promoting these opportunities and fordissemination of project results. . During the energy crisis years of the mid-1970s and early 1980s, he worked on energy research projects for several companies. Garcia was awarded his P.E. license in the state of Maryland in 1984. He received his M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from George Washington University (Washington, D.C.) in 1979. He graduated from the University of Texas (Austin) in 1966 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. These two courses consist of both theoryand laboratory work with a heavy reliance on student projects (typically, of an interdisciplinarynature) that involve the implementation of functional, proto-type, sensor/control networks. Usingpopular low-cost PIC® microcontroller development boards and a small, self-contained, non-IT,TCP/IP data network, students are able to construct sensor/control networks that can be accessedlocally either through standard wired network connections (Ethernet) or wirelessly using eitherthe IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) or IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee) wireless standards or remotely throughavailable mobile device apps. Three of these students graduated in spring 2011, and the remaining two areexpected to graduate by the end of the 2011-12 academic year. One of the students whograduated is now working full-time at the company that he interned with in the previous summer.His internship project was developed into his senior design team project as well. One of the othergraduates completed a post-graduate internship and now has a full-time job as a firmwareengineer at another company.
