Abstract

Summer Bridge to Community College Programs Emphasizing Engineering and TechnologyAbstract:Four-day summer bridge programs were held at a community college in August of 2008, 2009,2010, and 2011. Each summer bridge program was organized around the theme of the generationof electricity from renewable sources and provided an introduction to engineering design andgreen technology while emphasizing the centrality of applied mathematics to STEM careers.Participants explored the technology and engineering of alternative energy systems with hands-on activities that concentrated on wind and solar power design projects. Also, energyconservation and efficiency and carbon footprints were covered.Students in these bridge programs were selected from new applicants to the community collegeand from students already enrolled at the community college who had accumulated fewer than 15credits and were enrolled in developmental mathematics courses.Pre and post-surveys of student attitudes toward engineering were administered in 2009, 2010,and 2011 and an independent evaluator was employed to analyze and report on the results. Thereports from the independent evaluator will be included in the paper. An extensive tracking of the participants in all four summer bridge programs was conductedinternally by the community college and comparisons as to choice of major and subsequentsuccess in mathematics courses were made to similar students at the community college who didnot participate in the summer bridge programs. These findings will also be reported in the paper. The paper will conclude with modifications to the summer bridge program planned for 2012 inresponse to the results of the first four years.
