Four of our six casestudy institutions also offered “living and learning” communities that used an all-inclusiveapproach to support student retention. For this panel session, we also examined if engineering seniors’ plans to work in oroutside of an engineering profession differed by gender and race/ethnicity. The P2P surveycontains three measures for this analysis, tapping students’ expectations that after graduationthey will: 1) be a practicing engineer in industry, government, or non-profit organization; 2)work in engineering management or sales; and 3) work outside engineering. expectation was that the schools would cover the topics on thesyllabus so as to provide a breadth of understanding of various engineering disciplines andconcepts but the depth to which each was addressed was guided by the needs and resources ofeach school.Affordable – the schools needed to be able to offer the course with existing resources and staff.No new teachers would be hired and there were limited resources for training or purchasingsupplies or materials. The mentoring program has been verysuccessful, as indicated by the number of return attendees and alumni of the Bio-Discoveryprogram, who recommend their younger sisters or friends to the program. According to ourassessment data, the Bio-Discovery Program has been the most rewarding part of the programfor several of the REU participants, even though it also presented a challenge, as it limits theamount of time REU students can dedicate exclusively to their research projects. In the LSE program,iterative revision and recreation of an individualized curriculum and career plan are understoodas signs of success rather than failure or deviation. Students are encouraged to understand anddesign their major as a “whole-person technical degree” that does not require them to pass, toassimilate, to compartmentalize, or to conform to stereotypes. We suggest that this holisticflexibility may disrupt barriers such as impostor syndrome by positioning the student not asimpostor but as designer and creator – even when enrolled in technical courses in which thesex/gender ratio is skewed male. lower-level undergraduate students. Forthe last three years, we have recruited sophomore students for president positions, first byappointment, and later by officer elections. These lower-class presidents do not have as muchexperience as senior students or graduate students in the computing fields. They do not have thesame academic and career planning pressure as senior and graduate students, however, they wereenthusiastic and energetic. They were able to recruit sufficient number of officers, expand thegroup, and organize events.The executive board of WiCSE has evolved from four positions (president, vice president,secretary, treasurer) in 2014 to eight positions in 2018.
