engineering.IntroductionDespite gender similarities in mathematics and science achievement, women continue to beunderrepresented in STEM education and careers [1]-[3]. Of the 108,969 bachelor’s degrees inengineering awarded in 2013-2014, 20,031 (18.4%) were awarded to women [4]. Between 2000and 2013, the proportion of science and engineering bachelor’s degrees in all fields awarded towomen remained mostly flat with declines in computer science (10%), mathematics and statistics(5%), physics (3%), and engineering (1%) [5]. Some researchers reported retention rates inscience and engineering in the U.S. have been disproportionately high for women [1], [6], whileothers have pointed out the attrition rates for women were consistent with those in other majors[7]. Broad studies of retention inengineering education show promising results for women and other under-represented studentsin project-based courses2; however, engineering educators need a richer understanding of howspecific project-oriented pedagogies affect students’, and in particular women’s, motivations forengineering and their intended career plans. This study focuses on women because of theircontinued underrepresentation in engineering3, 4 and the need to ensure effective retention effortsin the midst of a movement to enact large-scale curricular transformation in engineering.To address this need, this

Boomer Generation) feminine STEM role model, while well-intentioned, cansometimes convey an unattainable level of success that is threatening to young girls.8 The NAE’s“Changing the Conversation” report (2008) provided examples of organizations that had createdfictional young feminine STEM role models9 in which engineering students are posed as guitarplayers or superheroes in an effort to convey a more exciting or well-rounded engineeringidentity. Others have employed soccer players and fashion bloggers to vouch for how “cool”STEM can be.10 Unfortunately, efforts to update and broaden the engineering identity havefocused too much exclusively on the career aspects of the profession (ex. an engineer at work) oremployed ineffective adult
