seniors worked with five or six first year female students in WISE;the mentors received a stipend for their efforts. They met weekly for six hours to informallydiscuss social and academic issues, work on course assignments, and develop a supportivenetwork. The participation of the first-year students was mandatory. The 11 mentors weresurveyed and/or interviewed in spring and fall of 2017.Design and methods. A phenomenological research design [16] was employed, whereby thecommon experiences of the subjects as undergraduate women mentors in STEM were explored,with a particular focus on the impact of mentoring on self-efficacy beliefs, personal growth, andleadership development. alignment of academia with women and industry with men stems from both personalimpressions of the field and from women professors’ observations of their own students. Womenin our sample noticed that female students tend to, for the most part, choose academia aftercompleting their engineering degrees whereas men choose industry. Academia as a “femalespace” is encouraged by graduate advisors or general societal impressions of both what is bestfor women’s and what is best for men’s interests: “…The technical things. Men like more do the technical things compared to the academician they don’t really like to teach someone…but they [men] like to do practical, do hands-on, the industry…” - Tutor, Chemical Engineering, 9 Years5.2.3

, Sally found the experience more successful. In this project, the labor wasdivided based on skill and ability: one teammate knew how to weld and so could build the devicethey were designing, so the other two (including Sally) conducted research. Sally ended up doingthe majority of the writing as her contribution, and thus the final product was much morecohesive. She also explained that their project received a high grade because of the quality of themachine they built rather than the quality of the report; for that project, she felt that “the writingdefinitely wasn’t emphasized,” and the effect of writing on the overall grade was unclear.Both women were asked to rate their writing skills in connection with their own assessment aswell as a

unusual in that it would logically follow that boys’ interestswould be less affected by their endorsement of girls in a particular field. In line with thisassumption, our results also suggest that boys have higher levels of interest in mathematics andtechnology, while endorsement does not play a role in this relationship. Why these relationshipsexist is conjecture. However, one of our researchers suggests boys may be playing a protectiverole over girls who like mathematics, science and STEM. graduate womenengineers. Regardless of the reason, a comprehensive study into the sociological, cultural andpsychological reasons for the lack of persistence has not been completed. The field has been leftwith an incomplete scope that has yet to provide understanding of the underlying issues or theculture of engineering programs.Once the experience of women in undergraduate engineering programs is more understood,universities and the field can make steps to alleviate the discrepancy in attainment rates betweenmen and women and broaden participation. The use of a critical lens and qualitativemethodology will allow for a basis of understanding from which leaders in the field can examinetheir own practice, and authentic, deep, meaningful discussion
