. FultonSchools of Engineering is located on ASU’s Tempe Campus, the largest single US campus with59,794 students. There are over 4,400 undergraduates and 2,100 graduate students inengineering and computer science. In this paper, “engineering” includes computer science, butnot construction.In Fall 2010, ASU had three NSF grants which supported transfer upper division and graduatestudents. The primary scholarship funding for transfer students was an NSF S-STEM grant(#0728695) called CIRC/METS (Collaborative Interdisciplinary ResearchCommunity/Motivated Engineering Transfer Students) for 2008-2012. If transfer students in thisCIRC/METS Program graduated and continued on to graduate school full-time right aftergraduating, they could receive a scholarship

engineering and computer science students who made up close to 60% of the totalenrollment in the program. Through the programming, the CIRC students were exposed totopics not normally found in the classroom such as portfolios, writing a good resume, and talksby practicing engineers on what it is “really like in industry”. The program has been determinedto be very successful and is being continued with an NSF S-STEM grant.II. Program HistoryThis first group was composed of 12 transfer students, 9 women, 5 minority students, and 2freshman minority students who were unable to attend Arizona State University withoutscholarship assistance. All of the students had at least a 3.0 GPA and all were in need offinancial assistance as determined by their FAFSA

S-STEM grant to recruit rural stu- dents from Iowa and Illinois into STEM. Dr. Prosise mentors the collegiate chapter of SWE and organizes many outreach events encourage girls to go into STEM. She leads a study-abroad trip for engineering students to Brazil every-other-year, where students design, build, and implement assistive technologies for people with disabilities. . Students were going to 6th grade (40.2%), 7th grade (31.5%), 8th grade (28.3%) duringthe summer. Additionally, the researchers randomly selected one or two students from eachgroup/table in camp 1 to 4. A total of 22 students presented their groups/tables to conduct in-depth interviews with us on the last day of each camp. Of the 22 interviewees, six were fromcamp 1, seven were from camp 2, five were from camp 3, and four were from camp 4. Allstudents and their guardians were required to sign consent letters.Instruments The instrument used in this study was the Middle/High School Student Attitudes towardSTEM (S-STEM) survey. This instrument was a useful tool in the evaluations of the university’soutreach projects and K-12 STEM initiative [46

academic year. This successful program ran from 2003-2008 with76 students and over a 92% retention and graduation rate in engineering and computerscience. Diversity was an emphasis and 65% of the students in the program were eitherfemale or an underrepresented minority.13 In particular, 29 (38.2%) of the transferstudents were women. This percentage is much higher than the current 18.2% of womenenrolled. For more information on these programs see references 4-13.The CIRC/METS program continues with an NSF S-STEM grant (#0836050), so thecontinuing students, from the first CIRC/METS program, when it ended are now beingsupported in a second CIRC/METS program with $4,000 scholarships per year. directly to the GUIDE scholars. As mentioned previously,the undergraduate students receive scholarships up to $2,500 annually depending on theirindividual student need. The MI students receive scholarships up to $3,000 for a year of support.The current program that is described in this paper ends in October, 2007. The program advisorshave submitted a proposal to the NSF S-STEM program to continue the program and expand it toinclude upper-division students.The GUIDE program has three faculty advisors: two that manage and advise the mentoringteams, organize the seminars and manage the program; the third advisor guides and recruits thegraduate students to the program.
