perceived group roles in the context of first-year engineering courses, weexplored female students’ learning experience in a group project setting in this work-in-progress using Benne and Sheats’ functional roles model. Based on our qualitativedata, we found that female students performed a range of roles in the group project. Inthe dimension of task roles, female students usually took the roles of assistants, opiniongiver, coordinators and initiator-managers. In the dimension of social roles, femalesserved as harmonizers, followers or gatekeepers. universities, where the researchers asked participants aboutproblems they encountered during their engineering curriculum and to comment on problemscenarios. Findings suggest that students often lack resources for effectively solving teamproblems, though “high achieving” students, defined as having a self-reported GPA of 3.5 orabove, are often more proactive when dealing with slacker teammates, using strategies such assetting early deadlines or selecting teammates known also to be high achievers. to serve as teaching assistants. Teaching assistants at Dartmouth are typicallyundergraduate students themselves who have done well in the courses for which they serve asteaching assistants. Responsibilities of the teaching assistants include running problem sessions(optional evening help sessions), grading problem sets, and helping to set up and rundemonstrations and laboratories. Teaching assistants are not responsible for grading quizzes,exams or projects. engineering summer camp for high school girls. Wetook a two-prong approach: a unifying paradigm and a design project. The purpose of this was toallow for transfer of learning throughout the week, allowing the students to build and showcasetheir own comprehension. The paradigm, the materials science tetrahedron, provided cohesionthroughout an otherwise broad and seemingly disconnected field, while the design projectallowed for students to implement what they learned during the week in a group setting. Thisapproach concomitantly enhances confidence and their sense of belonging within engineering.
