developed the Academic Self-Efficacy Scaleand the Professional Self-Efficacy Scale. The Likert survey responses were used to generate thesemi-structured interview protocol to more fully investigate the impact of their participation ontheir perception of engineering.Two areas of particular interest are: 1) what professional skills were gained as a result ofparticipating, and 2) the impact of CDS on persistence to pursue engineering professionally. Allparticipants were interviewed to gain a deeper understanding of their survey responses. Closeexamination of their surveys and interviews may provide a key to motivating more youngwomen to persist in engineering as a career.The construct of perceived Self-Efficacy reflects an optimistic self-belief15

an undergraduate first-year engineering course, a five-week module on leadership wasoffered in addition to two other modules focused on more traditional engineering topics,bioengineering and mechanical engineering. Students were able to choose two out of the threemodules as part of their requirement for the course. The leadership module presentedmechanisms for developing professional skills and also provided hands-on application of theseskills through K-12 service learning at a local science museum. working [in industry].”Disparities in the entrepreneurial/industry connections In this study, the engineering departments revealed a high degree of involvement in theprivate sector. Many women doctoral students discussed their male advisers’ engagement inindustry and its impact on the mentoring relationship. When asked to describe their major waysof interacting with faculty advisers, their responses reflected the absence of mentoring outside oftheir primary research due to the fact that many faculty members are busy “advising somecompany in the private sector” or handling “their own engineering companies.” Suchentrepreneurism was only reported of male professors, given that the few female professors inthe School of Engineering are fairly

,which is common for all engineering students. The courses are subdivided into three groups:mathematics, energy and material science, information and communication science. Parallelto the regular coursework, all engineering students take the project based course ProblemSolving and Engineering Design (acronym P&O in Dutch) that introduces them from the firstsemester onwards into real engineering practice and teamwork.1Each year around 450 students enter the first year of the Bachelor’s program, which iscommon for all engineering disciplines. Western, whileabout 80% of male tenure track faculty chose work-life balance and teaching/research balance asstrong motivations. It was interesting that the most important considerations for TT faculty weredifferent than those for tenured faculty, and those expectations differed more by gender fortenured faculty. We speculate that these differences may also reflect the changing nature ofcomprehensive institutions. Across all ranks, the opportunities for collaboration seemed moreimportant to women considering careers at comprehensive institutions.  We also surveyed faculty regarding the distribution of time faculty allocated to teaching,research, and service. While TT males report nearly 67% of their time was allocated to teachingactivities, all

, and engineering needs should be both representative of the peopleand their diversity. Charles and Bradley’s findings and their analytical framework offer anunexplored in the US engineering education literature approach to scoping the persistent problemof recruiting women into undergraduate engineering programs and into the profession in general.Just as in engineering design, if the problem isn’t scoped accurately, the solution will not berobust. It’s time for our solution to target the core issue(s).The Case in JordanAccording to the Jordan Engineers Association (JEA), female engineers represented 18.6% of allthe registered engineers in JEA between 1948 and early 2011. 4 This reflects 15,680 femaleengineers registered currently in six
