We took field trips to thecommunity partner organizations and students were asked to share reflections on needs theyidentified, and hypothetical case studies were created out of the BOOST projects. The studentsalso learned to communicate and interact professionally with the community partners. Studentswere assigned to project teams and met with the faculty mentors to begin forming team bondsand brainstorming conceptual designs, and discussing potential ethical issues that wouldinfluence their decisions. While faculty have many opportunities available to them during sabbatical, including research projects and different teaching experiences, the author is a strong advocate for industrybased sabbaticals, especially for those faculty who have limited industry experience or who regularly teach courses with industry connections, such as capstone design.
