We recruitedparticipants by emailing campus organizations and student groups, explaining the purpose of thestudy, and seeking students who identified as marginalized within their engineering experience.Students then scheduled an individual interview with two members of the research team,conducted over Zoom. We include some of these data, selected for race, in this paper and explorethem further in other publications [28]–[30].We had developed our classroom observation protocol, now scheduled for fall 2020, anticipatingin-person instruction. OutcomesThree pillars of excellence support the expanded diversity and inclusion work effort for theBOLD Center: access, retention and performance (Louie & Sullivan, 2010). Expecting anddriving towards excellence establishes the belief and means to accomplish the new program’sgoals. Along with seeking excellence, really understanding our data became, and still is, aguiding principle for our work. We slowly came to realize our passivity in creating andmaintaining systems rather than actively seeking real change. As part of a set of initiatives to transform highereducation at Purdue University, the Polytechnic Institute (PI) was designed to be a multi-disciplinary, hands-on, competency-based experience for undergraduate students in technologyprograms. In Spring 2014, the PI began recruiting students, and in Fall 2014, the programopened its doors to its first cohort. The faculty who had taken a year to design and develop thefirst year curriculum eagerly awaited their new mentees. However, students came in with theirown hopes and concerns, which impacted their desire to join and remain in the program.Students were not alone in their decision-making. They were guided and
