the Internet. Virtual labs have been shown to be effective inimproving student understanding of important engineering concepts17-19. For example, researchers at UCLA found that students perceived learning gains when using the Interactive SiteInvestigation Software (ISIS) to perform virtual field work such as constructing wells, collectinggroundwater samples, submitting samples for laboratory testing, and executing hydraulictransport experiments10. Applications of remote labs in engineering education have also beenshown to improve student understanding of engineering concepts20-21 and are comparable tohands-on labs8-9,22. For example, researchers at Rutgers University found that there was nodifference in educational outcomes between students

againstcyber treats is education. According to Frost and Sullivan [7], a global shortage of 1.8 millioncybersecurity professionals is projected by 2022. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected 37%of information security job growth from 2012 to 2022 and announced that more than 200,000cybersecurity jobs in U.S. are not filled every year.Education in cybersecurity draws more attention from K-12 to adult. Recently, U.S. Congresshas urged to develop high-quality educators to cybersecurity education [8]. Many researchersstudied teaching methodologies to maximize the student learning. One of the key components inengineering and science education is a laboratory-based course, which includes a practical hand-on exercise. Many academic institutes developed

distanceor online education, there are many challenges to overcome in that space. In Mechanical Engineering, manytraditional courses depend on hands-on laboratories in addition to the face-to-face classes. Some researcherswere able to offer the laboratories as online for appropriate subjects such as control (Duan et al. 2005)however, this might be more challenging in other topics within mechanical engineering. Use of experientiallearning, i.e., projects designed with often low-cost kits for physical activity is also found to be beneficialin an online Mechanics course (Dittenber & Ironside 2017).A major challenge in determining the online course quality is student’s engagement and motivationcompared to the face-to-face courses. We, a team of minority undergraduate engineering students, led a qualitative analysis ofthe websites of two national labs: Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Kansas CityNational Security Campus (KCNSC). The website content was analyzed by extracting excerptsthat matched keywords related to engineering careers. Each excerpt was annotated with ourimpression of the company as a potential employer. Critics of engineering education argue that educational programs focus toomuch on the transmittal of information through static lecture-discussion formats and routine useof outdated laboratory exercises6, 7. This educational approach often results in graduates, who donot have a full range of employable skills, such as, the ability to apply the knowledge skillfullyto problems

Thisstudy also targets to understand engineering students' preferences concerning design-basedprojects compared to traditional classroom and laboratory experiences. The emerging global trend in education involves integrating professional competencies into thecurriculum, complementing the technical aspects of engineering. Engineering education shouldbe complete with technical knowledge in addition to the development of professional skills.Starting this process from freshmen engineering ensures students are

These industry sessions, therefore, provided a general, real-world contrast while students were also doing a deep dive into one specificarea to complete a laboratory research project in six weeks.A third reason, as we discussed in a previous paper [1], is consistent with some general designelements known to inspire and increase inclusion. For example, an Industry Energy Program willhelp deepen the REM student’s understanding between theory, research, and application; of howwhat they learn in class relates to what companies may be doing. For students with morecommunity-minded orientations (i.e., altruistic cultural values), this bigger picture of what ishappening in the different energy sectors, and learning about real

Instead, the course was taught using normal methods andtechniques, except for the transition to a hybrid format. Lectures were performed synchronouslyonline, while field-based laboratory activities that were intended to reinforce the concepts taughtin the lecture were performed in-person. Due to social distancing regulations, instructions on thelaboratory activities were provided virtually (instead of in-person in prior semesters) andimmediate assistance was only available through phone calls or video conferencing. students this opportunity, especially if done in an in-class orlaboratory setting. Laboratory courses give students a more hands-on approach to the conceptsand skills they are learning, making it a great time for individual and group reflection. However,if reflection is to be implemented within the laboratory setting, it is critical that the workload ofthe laboratory is not significantly increased. Adding a reflective portion to laboratory exerciseswithout revising the other activities will most likely contribute to students becoming overworked, which is detrimental to the very thing trying to be accomplished. This is discussed more later.Overall, this evolution towards making connections and reflective learning necessitates a shift inthe mindset

This has been achieved by actively engagingparticipants with STEM professionals in an inquiry and project based instructional environment.Using the latest sensor technology for data collection and computer modeling for data analysis, students address the widespread problem of stormwater management. During a 3-dayStormwater Institute at the University of Maine, the participants gain the knowledge of workingwith wireless sensors and laboratory systems to collect water measurements, includingtemperature, conductivity, pH, phosphorous, dissolved oxygen, and bacteria.
