The undergraduate and graduate mentors participated in discussions andworkshops covering topics such as being a role model in the lab; promoting a “growth mindset”[12 ] and incorporating inclusive pedagogy when mentoring [13]; what “success” means andwho decides; examining different identities [14]; and leveraging the mentoring experience whenapplying for future career jobs. education. We have collected data from undergraduate junior-standingengineering modeling and design students at our university through a longitudinal studyspanning the last three years. The statistical analysis has helped us identify important factors thatcan influence success of students in their future engineering careers. These include problemsolving, communication, and logical thinking skills, perception of self-efficacy to developstudents’ self-belief, and their course grades. The purpose of present work is to examine theeffect of PBL activities on engineering students’ grades and self-efficacy. ) more than 15 years ago that perked his interest in joining theengineering professoriate. ITM is still running to this day and it is by far the largest gathering ofracial/ethnic minority PhD scholars who are interested in faculty careers in academia, includingmany McNair Scholars. A closer examination of the 2019 ITM roster reveals that only 36 of the113 R1 schools studied in this paper sent college representatives to this important gathering. Thisdoes not inspire confidence about the commitment of the engineering professoriate to movebeyond symbolic gestures and addressing this disparity.Much has been written about strategies and practices that can promote a more robust applicantpool and a fairer selection process [4]. Lessons can be learned
