design and apply the concepts learned in a lecture. The class wassuccessful in introducing the broad field of BME in a short summer course and motivatedstudents to consider pursuing STEM majors in college. Data on the alumni and their chosencollege are still being collected and will be presented in the final poster and conclusion.These results demonstrate that by the end of the course students were invested in the productthey had designed from scratch, had seen real world applications, and learned about the field ofBME. shape of the structure would causelarge deflections that would compromise the connection. The weight of the structure is 0.94 lbs,resulting in a mass of 0.0023 lb/(in/s^2). Under its own weight, the structure deflected 3.38 inches,as can be seen in the image to the right in Figure 2. This testing of the structure revealed that thestructure’s stiffness was 0.27 lb/in. Following simple calculations, the natural period of thestructure was determined to be 0.56 seconds. Testing of the inverted pyramid indicated threedistinct modes of oscillation. (36 students). Nearly all students (41/42) recognizedthat flow cytometry is able to distinguish between different cell types (Table 2). Additionally, amajority of students (34/42) recognized that flow cytometry is able to distinguish between cellsof the same type (Table 2). Students were asked how flow cytometry might distinguish betweencells of the same type; there was no single correct answer, and many students provided one ormore reasonable response(s) (Table 2). Students were then asked to describe the type of data thatis generated by flow cytometry, choosing from a list of four options rather than generatingindividual responses (Table 2). . There is a multi-week final project in which two-person teams programa game that requires a hardware interface. Students are loaned a LabJack and an additional kitwhich contains electronic parts like resistors, LEDs, switches, jumper wires, and a protoboard.In past years, the ECE 102 final project has been based either on the television game show“Wheel of Fortune” or the 80’s electronic toy “Simon”. At this stage a fair amount of technicalassistance and background information is given, since many of the students have not worked onsubstantial program development or interfacing before.
