Course content must be highly relevant and authentic. Employ project-based learning that challenges and enables students to apply what they are learning to their workplace projects. Provide flexibility in assignments that allow students to hone their learning to their specific goals. Engage the experience and expertise of students for the benefit of all learners in the class. Engage experienced, capable instructional designers in the design of the program and each course. success rates, the level of these rates isstill considerably low at 70%, which needs to be improved up to 80% by 2020 [1-3]. Universityadministration, faculty members, parents, and students are all concerned about this and, hence, are looking for a solution to increase these rates at WSU.Our major goal of this study was to address the problem associated with retention and successrates of freshmen students through undergraduate research experience in the nanotechnologylaboratory at WSU. Also, we expect that this will considerably improve the graduation rate(40%) of first-time, full-time freshmen students at WSU. The specific objectives of this studywere as follows: (i) to educate freshmen science and engineering students based on hands-onexperience

leveraging the most from theseexperiences and to assist programs that might consider initiating or refining their ownparticipation in similar programs.Introduction For decades, the engineering community has wrestled with finding an appropriate balancebetween classical educational pedagogy and practical research and/or design experiences fordeveloping engineers at the undergraduate level. There is no single recipe for success that allprograms should follow, though much has been discussed on the topic and the idea of changeand reform is not a new one1-4. An example of a major reform activity is the timing of theintroduction of engineering design into a program’s curriculum. The literature is replete withgenerally successful examples, a subset of

As theworld economy becomes more integrated, graduates from accredited programs (both ABET andMRA partner organizations) will enter the workforce, and work in a very dynamic globalenvironment. Civil engineers will cross geographic borders frequently, seeking professionallicensure, graduate education and employment in a number of countries. Since the document was shared with the twoinstructors via Google Drive we were able to check in on the students’ understandingperiodically throughout the course and provide feedback via the “Comment” feature. We chosethis form of assessment because it allowed us to gauge student understanding in an organic waythat would seem relevant to the students, rather than quiz-style assessment that we feared wouldbe viewed as busy work. The second prong of our assessment plan is to measure the long-term impact of the course via anonline survey that we will send

Yetthere are notable exceptions. Parkinson provides an overview of 24 exemplary programs, notingthat a few have ambitious goals to increase their number of graduates with an internationalexperience.
