[11] has addressed theissue and summarized recent work regarding both teaching and assessing these non-technicalskills. Assessment, it should be noted, is of particular concern to educational institutions due tothe more stringent requirements being placed on them by regional accrediting agencies, as wellas by ABET. The authors point out that these non-technical skills can certainly be taught, thoughnot necessarily in the traditional lecture format, as has already been alluded to. Teamwork skills havetraditionally been developed by assigning students to teams. observation from these responses is that while the students might have learned an adequate level of math and science at school they have not yet gathered enough insights and intuition into how they can apply their knowledge to solving real-world problems. This suggests that teaching the students very complex math and science concepts alone in an isolated framework does not appear to adequately promote their interests in math and science. Rather, it is the application of science in terms of interesting, problem-solving projects that captures the students’ interests in math and science.
