He received the BSEE and MSEE degrees from the Illinois Institute of Technology and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Purdue University. During his college career he worked four summers at U.S. Steel as an assistant electrician, rewinding motors and installing electrical equipment. He served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, including six years designing, constructing, and inspecting electric power distribution projects for a variety of facilities.
